Lahore: The provincial agriculture department has set up 25 model markets under the first phase of its pilot project pertaining to the establishment of agriculture markets, a news source reported. A further 25 markets will be upgraded as part of the project.
Secretary Agriculture Wasif Khursheed, during his visit to a fruit and vegetable market at Kot Lakhpat, said the government plans to transform agriculture markets and a comprehensive plan has been chalked out in this regard. He was accompanied by Special Secretary Ehsan Bhutta, Director (E&D) and Director (Fund Board), who briefed the secretary regarding a monitoring system which will maintain record of wholesale markets.
Khursheed, while inspecting CCTV cameras installed in the market, directed officials concerned to demolish encroachments and other illegal structures in agriculture markets.
He said anomalies like parking stands of market committees and auction rate-lists are being plugged. He added that a comprehensive programme is being devised to ensure availability of essential items in the market.
