Lahore: The Punjab Government has decided to run around 10,800 schools in Southern Punjab on solar power, a news source reported. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Sardar Usman Buzdar.

The CM has ordered the officials concerned to complete the project by December 2019. He added that the provincial government would ensure the provision of solar energy to remote areas of Cholistan, Thal, Rajanpur, and Dera Ghazi Khan. He stated that it will make use of an off-grid solution to supply electricity to far-flung villages. He directed the energy department to prepare a feasibility report for this purpose.
The meeting decided to convert government varsities to solar power in phases. Buzdar added basic health facilities and water supply schemes would also be shifted to solar power.

The CM also directed officials concerned to speed up the campaign against power theft, and ordered the CM Task Force to keep taking indiscriminate action in this regard.
