A choice of names could be suggested by votes and competitions in newspapers. A person I know says that most names beginning with the letter b are unlucky for her such as Bosnia, Benazir, Beirut [she named many others] as they are symbols of strife and unhappiness! Names beginning with vowels are supposed to be lucky [in numerology] what do others think?

These are superstitions. One must have faith in ALLAH. We should seek help from ALLAH only. If ALLAH is with us, then who cares the name starts with what letter.
If 'B' is something unlucky, then see Malik Shb is getting richer day by day thorugh Bahria. Now Bahria reaches Karachi even, with 3 very huge projects,
So, Tawaqqal is missing. Have Faith !!!

Tell me some other letter (except B), i will tell you the long list of misfortunes, horrible things, miserable persons starting from that letter. There is nothing in starting alphabets or numbers etc, it is only due to weak faith on Allah. Basically all these things and believes are of Hinduism and very opposite to basic laws and principles of Islam but people still believes many things.
