Choosing Where to Live

Dear all,

I wanted to know about your opinions on selecting a place for living. What do you keep in mind while selecting a place? What are the most important things e.g:

Budget

Security

Distance to Workplace

Facilities

Size of House

Healthy Environment for the Children, etc?

How would you prioritise such things?

Would you choose to live in a small house but a great neighbourhood with a high quality of life or would you choose to go for a large house with all the luxuries but surrounded by a neighbourhood that is not up to your standard? Or would you choose something in-between?

Would you choose a place based on where you work? Or would you try to find work that is near to your place of living/city? Is migration from one place to another in search of a better life a good thing overall?

Your opinions are highly appreciated and i'm sure we would all learn a lot from such a discussion.

Budget is a binding constraint for the middle class so it has to be kept at the top. After that my order of preference would be:

  1. Availability of main utilities (electricity, gas, water, sewage)

2.Security of the area given current law & order situation.

  1. Size of plot/house

  2. Access to workplace (I don't consider distance to be a good indicator of travelling hassle, it is the quality of road link which matters more.)

  3. Other facilities (Parks, markets, etc.)

And to answer your last question, as I have experienced both situations, I would prefer to live in a smaller house but in a good neighborhood and not vice versa.

You are quite right Kashif Sb… But I think security and a good neighbourhood should be at the top (according to budget off course). Utilities like electricity, gas, water and sewage are manageable problems I think.

Decent neighborhood and proper security measures are vital bt uninterrupted gas,electricity,water,plus distance to school,hospital and main grocery stores etc shud also be considered as very important as these are related to our basic needs and one has to deal with them on almost daily basis.

Establish Your Priorities

Transportation Issues

A major consideration for most home buyers when it comes to choosing where to live is how they’ll get to the places they go regularly. In communities near or in a city, prime locations are typically close to public transit options. Many suburban communities are being designed around a ‘town center’ concept so that residents can walk to restaurants, shops and entertainment and sometimes even to work.

When you’re looking for a home, you should consider how convenient it is for you and for future potential buyers when you’re ready to sell.

Homes that are located close to a subway station or to popular commuter routes are often more costly than those that require a longer commute to a city center, so ask your Realtor to show you areas that may have similar attributes but are less expensive. Alternatively, if living in a particular neighborhood is your number one priority, you may need to compromise in terms of the size home you buy or its condition.

How to Compare Communities

It’s important to visit a prospective neighborhood at various times of day and on both weekdays and weekends to get a feel for what it would be like to live there. Look at how the homes are maintained to see if they meet your standards. Try to talk to residents about what the community is like and test out your commute at the time of day you typically go to work.

No matter what your pay grade is, living comfortably and within your means should be your first concern. Affordability includes more than just housing expenses; the prices for consumable goods, like groceries, vary greatly from town to town. The price of gasoline, utility services including electric and water, and taxes, also varies.

Location, Connectivity from main business areas, road maps, and basic infra-structure comes on top most priority. Rest most of the things depends purely on your budgets.
