Karachi: The provincial government and World Bank (WB) on Tuesday announced their decision to initiate a USD 200 million Solid Waste Emergency and Efficiency Project (SWEEP) — designed to eliminate waste from the sewerage lines and streets of Karachi, according to news sources.
The decision was publicized after a delegation from WB, headed by Practice Manager South Asia (Urban) Catalina Marulanda, met with Chief Minister (CM) Syed Murad Ali Shah at his residence for an in-depth meeting.
The CM stated that an Asian Development Bank (ADB) fund of PKR 1.6 billion had been utilized to improve the solid waste management disposal system within the city. He added that the government was keen to repurpose this waste into sustainable energy.
