Islamabad: The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) was informed on Thursday that a sum of PKR 148.268 million has been allocated as a ‘Zakat fund’ for the newly-merged-tribal-districts (NMTDs) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to news sources.

The meeting also discussed the status of its recommendation to the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) for doubling the students’ quota from NMTDs at medical and dental universities across the country. The PMC secretary briefed the meeting that an official notification has been circulated in all provinces, except Balochistan.

Committee member Muhammad Iqbal Khan remarked that matters of importance are still being resolved through jirgas without the involvement of elected representatives; which is a challenge for the development of NMTDs. While another committee member brought the matter of people of NMTD holding multiple domiciles to the meeting’s attention.
