Lahore: Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Managing Director (MD) Syed Zahid Aziz on Wednesday announced that the government body has initiated the process to acquire land for the development of the city’s first surface water treatment plant, a news source reported. As per the publication, the project is estimated to cost several billion rupees and has already been approved by the federal government.

MD Aziz further added that the project had been cleared by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) screening committee, and that the National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) had finished the mandatory paperwork required for the project. He added that the surface water treatment water plant would be built at Bhini Village at River Ravi.

The WASA MD stated that an estimated three to four million acre-feet water comes from India to Pakistan through the Ravi river. As this water usually happens to be less polluted, WASA plans on storing and treating it for the provision of drinking water to the public. He added that the project aimed to preserve the underground water aquifer for the coming generations.

According to the reports, WASA will develop one surface water treatment plant and three wastewater treatment plants in Lahore in order to provide clean drinking water to the citizens.
