Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Social Welfare Department recently announced the launch of an eco-friendly project for transgenders to manufacture fabric bags in order to dissuade people from the use of plastic bags in Swat District, a news source reported.

Swat Additional Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Zamin Khan inaugurated the fabric bags project and assured the transgenders that their rights would be protected and their issues resolved at the earliest.

The project has been launched to provide transgenders with dignified employment of manufacturing fabric bags with the help of the Swat district administration. The project would involve transgenders in Swat, regardless of their birth in other districts.

The goal of the project is to provide an alternative to plastic bags through the use of eco-friendly fabric bags, with the eventual goal to ban the use of plastic bags in the district altogether.

District Social Welfare Officer Nusrat Iqbal said that 32 sewing machines had been distributed among the transgender community and that the district administration would be overseeing the progress of the project. She added that once the demand for eco-friendly bags increases, transgender manufacturers will be able to sell the bags in the market directly.

A representative of the Environmental Protection Society Muhammad Haseeb Khan said that they would support the district administration’s projects for the upliftment of the transgender community. He added that they will be trained in beautician courses and that a beauty parlour would also be set up for the community.
