Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Tuesday ordered Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad to formulate and submit a comprehensive business plan for the Railways department within two weeks, according to news sources.

The order was given by a three-member bench of the SC, which comprised of the Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed, Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan. The justices were presiding over a case regarding the disappointing recent performance of the Pakistan Railways.
The apex court asked minister Ahmad to draft a plan that would help make the government department profitable. Moreover, the court also took the opportunity to enquire about the status of a project aimed at up-grading railway tracks across the country.

The minister said that he would honour the SC’s instructions and ensure that improvements are made to the current state of affairs within the railways department. He also expressed his gratitude to the court for taking up the matter in the first place.
The SC, while adjourning the hearing till February 12, also summoned the Federal Minister for Planning, Development, Reforms and Special Initiatives Asad Umar to explain the delay in tender issuance for the Main Line 1 (ML-1) project.

The ML-1 is the railway line that is expected to connect Karachi and Peshawar, and is being developed as part of the projects launched under the auspices of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
