Karachi: The revenue collection recorded by the Regional Tax Office (RTO)–II, Karachi registered a 40% increase in January due to the effective monitoring of domestic sales and the initiation of aggressive campaigns aimed at broadening the tax base (BTB) — a news source reported.

The collection for the month of January 2020 rose to PKR 13.35 billion, as compared to PKR 9.5 billion in the same month of the last year.
The BTB efforts of the RTO-II Karachi also yielded a 44% increase in the number of returns filed for the tax year 2019. The tax office received 121,300 tax returns by December 31, 2019; compared to the 84,100 income tax returns received for the tax year 2018.

A breakdown of the tax collection showed that income tax collection had risen by 40% to move up to PKR 12.68 billion during January 2020; as compared to PKR 9.03 billion in January 2019.
The regional tax office also has jurisdiction over collection of sales tax from domestic supplies. This also registered an increase of 42% from PKR 472 million in January 2019, to PKR 671 million in January 2020.
