Lahore: Punjab Minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Social Welfare Raja Basharat on Tuesday chaired a meeting to review the rules and procedures for the establishment of new districts and tehsils in the province, a news source reported.

Members of the task force responsible for reviewing the province’s boundaries were told that the population of some tehsils had surpassed those of some districts, which made it mandatory to revise their current boundaries.

The additional chief secretary stated that the local district administration would design proposals for the formation of new districts and tehsils according to the terms of reference of the task force. Further, these suggestions would be scrutinised by a study group involving representatives of the Punjab Board of Revenue, the Planning and Development Department, the Finance Department, and the Excise and Taxation Department.

The study group will consider the proposals with reference to geography, population, and economic position and dispatch its recommendations to the cabinet committee for further action.

The minister further stated that the provision of facilities and services to the local population would be prioritised in the proposed tehsils and districts.
