Rawalpindi: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan recently provided his approval to the development of the Leh Expressway project, a news source reported. He further issued instructions for converting the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA)’s tube wells to solar power, operationalising the OPD of Urology Institute within a period of two weeks, as well as registering locals’ birth and death certificates on a timely basis.

In a meeting held on Sunday, the prime minister met with members of the National Assembly. During the meeting, Federal Parliamentary Secretary (Narcotics) Sheikh Rashid Shafique said that the development work on Leh Expressway should be launched to resolve Rawalpindi’s traffic woes.
He also briefed the PM regarding the electricity issue that hinders the running of tube wells, and the issue of non-availability of funds for the 25 UCs that merged into a metropolitan corporation, from the district councils. He appraised the PM that people will face complications to register deaths and births if these UCs were to be shut down.

The PM lauded the Leh Expressway project and acceded that it was the only solution to the traffic congestion issue in the city. He assured that the funds for this project would be allocated in the next fiscal budget.
He further directed Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar to shift the tube wells in the city to solar power and to provide the funds for the payment of electricity bills until the project is completed. He instructed Chief Secretary Punjab to immediately resolve the issue of non-availability of funds for the aforementioned 25 UCs.
