Peshawar: A two-member bench of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Thursday directed the authorities concerned to remove all cellphone tower constructions located near hospitals and educational facilities in the city, a news source reported.

Justice Qaiser Rasheed Khan and Justice Abdul Shakoor heard an application filed against cellular companies who had installed cellphone base transceiver stations (BTS) near health and educational institutions.

According to reports, a citizen Mohammad Naeem filed a writ petition against the hazardous effects of BTS or cellphone towers on human health. The officials of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Environmental Protection Agency and representatives of the cellular network companies concerned were present at the occasion.

The petitioner’s counsel argued that BTS towers emitted microwaves at the frequency of 1,900 megahertz, which posed a health hazard for everyone living being within one square kilometre.

The counsel further stated that various researches conducted on BTS effects revealed that it could cause several issues, including cardiovascular stress, headaches, miscarriages, memory loss, nervous system problems, and cancer.
The next hearing of the case was adjourned until February 22.
