Islamabad: The National Highway Authority (NHA) has successfully removed the snow that had been holding up traffic on the Karakoram Highway (KKH), a news source reported.

Heavy snowfall and a spell of cold affected the Sost-Khunjerab section of the KKH. An emergency operation for snow clearance was conducted as KKH is considered a life-line for the Gilgit-Baltistan region.

Similarly, the NHA also cleared snow from the North and South Portal roads of Lowari Tunnel located on National Highway (N-45), which runs from Nowshera to Chitral via Dir in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). As per the details, at average 1 to 1.50-metre snowfall was recorded in that region.

The officers and staff of NHA and contractor of routine maintenance personnel arranged machinery for clearing snow, such as graders, tractors, and bulldozers, etc., at the sites concerned and executed snow removal operation on an urgent basis. Resultantly, the Lowari tunnel and its access roads have been opened for safe traffic flow.
