Lahore: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Information Technology Board (KPITB) created a smartphone app called ‘The Safe Women’, with added upgrades for female commuters using the Pink Sakura Bus, according to a news report. This app will offer them security through a number of user-friendly features.
The upgrades enable women to share their live location with their chosen family members or friends while travelling. They can also send distress signals, call police emergency numbers, give safety ratings to various locations, and track their rides. Managing Director KPITB Dr Shahbaz Khan gave a demonstration of these features and explained their salient points.
The officials who attended this demonstration included the Adviser to Chief Minister on Information Technology Ziaullah Bangash, female members of the provincial assembly, representatives from Trans Peshawar – Sakura Bus Operating Company, UN Women representatives, and representatives from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
Safe Women is KPITB’s contribution to the Pink Sakura Bus project launched by the KP government. It was created with financial support from Japan and technical support from UN Women Pakistan and UNOPS.
