Karachi: Sindh Forest Department Secretary Abdurrahim Somro on Monday announced the provincial executive’s decision to inaugurate the ‘world’s largest’ urban forest reserve along the Malir and Lyari rivers in February, a news source reported. He further stated that Minister for Local Government & Forests Syed Nasir Hussain Shah had issued directives to this effect.

He expressed his views on the matter during a meeting held to review the progress on urban forest development in the province. District West Deputy Commissioner Fayaz Solangi, Chief Conservator Ijaz Nizami, West District Municipal Corporation Chairman Izharuddin, and Divisional Forest Officer Maqsood Ahmed were all present at the occasion.

Somro informed the attendees that the authorities concerned would plant trees along the bank of Lyari River during the first phase of the project, while a plantation drive would be carried along the Malir River during the second phase. The forest would spread over an area of 26 kilometres, he added.

He said that the provincial government would plan fruit-bearing trees in the forests, in addition to making arrangements for developing recreational facilities, such as playgrounds, jogging tracks, and sports grounds for children.
