Lahore: Punjab Minister of Forestry Sibtain Khan recently directed the city’s housing societies to allocate a designated area on their premises for the plantation of trees, a news source reported. As per the publication, the minister remarked that this would lead to an estimated 0.5million trees being planted in Lahore; and more than 120 million trees across the province.

The minister stated that a monitoring committee would be made for the tree plantation campaign. He added that trees would also be planted on highways, link roads, and on the banks of streams and rivers etc.

Minister Khan revealed that Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) would be made for housing societies, and that the housing schemes that failed to follow the government’s directives would not be granted a no objection certificate (NOC).

He further added that PKR 2.28 billion had been approved for the plantation of trees in the province, and that the punishment for illegal woodcutters would be made more severe in order to discourage these miscreants.
