Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government on Sunday announced its decision to establish an economic zone in the Khyber Tribal District; in addition to the development of an expressway to link the border town of Torkham with Peshawar, according to news sources.
An announcement in this regard was made during a progress review meeting held for the newly-merged-tribal districts (NTMDs), under the chair of KP Chief Minister (CM) Mahmood Khan.

The CM was informed that this new economic zone for the Khyber Tribal District would be developed under the Integrated Transit Trade Management System (ITTMS), and would cost an estimated PKR 16 billion. Under this proposed project, the Pakistan-Afghanistan border will remain open around the clock.
During the meeting, CM Khan stated that the Peshawar-Torkham expressway (which is expected to cost an estimated 55.44 billion to develop) will not only boost trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan, but also ensure the development of the tribal districts.

He further took the opportunity to direct all the provincial departments to expedite the development work on all existing schemes currently underway in the erstwhile federally administrated tribal areas (FATA).
The meeting was also informed that as many as 508 youths of the Khyber district would benefit from the Prime Minister’s flagship Kamyab Jawan Programme. Additionally, almost 567 domicile holders of this district would get interest-free loans of PRK 110 million, under the Insaf Rozgar initiative.
The CM was also appraised about the Bara Dam that is expected to be developed at a cost of PKR 560 million. The project aims to benefit one million people, irrigate 1,7000 hectares of land and generate six megawatts of electricity.
