Islamabad: In a bid to promote transparency and friendly policing in the federal capital, the Islamabad Police has officially started to wear body cameras (attached to their uniforms) since Thursday (January 23), according to news sources.

In the first phase of the operation, these body cams will be worn by the police officers designated to patrol the pickets between Zero Point and Aabpara on Kashmir Highway.

In a recent ceremony held at the Interior Ministry, and attended by Interior Minister Ijaz Shah and Inspector General Islamabad Police (IGP) Aamir Zulfiqar, the cameras were pinned to the policemen.

The IGP briefed the minister and said that these cameras will capture photos and videos of the department’s interactions with the public – in an attempt to curb any instances of corrupt practices on the part of everyone involved.

The IGT further said that the department had procured 10 night-vision body cams on a self-help basis upon the directives of Prime Minister Imran Khan. Five of these have been given to the officers concerned; with the remaining set to be given in the next few days. These devices will be synced to the Safe City Project control room.

Next, the street patrolling and desk officers will be given body cameras in the next phase of the initiative, he added.
