Peshawar: Senior Joint Secretary (Aviation Division) Abdul Sattar Khokar recently announced the government’s decision to reopen the airport at Saidu Sharif — with the initiative aimed at expanding the tourism industry in Swat Valley, according to news sources.

The join secretary made these comments while presiding over a meeting to discuss the operationalisation of the airport, which has remained closed for almost two decades. The meeting also discussed other methods to promote the tourism industry in the region, with secretary Khokar further revealing that the reopening date of the Saidu Sharif airport would be announced soon.
Officials from Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan International Airlines and Civil Aviation Authority were also in attendance during the meeting.

The meeting was informed that the airport used to act as a prominent outlet for domestic service delivery and tourists travelling in the region. However, due to an economic recession and the security situation in the area, the Saidu Sharif airport had been closed for commercial flights and reserved for security purposes instead.
