Rawalpindi: The federal government’s flagship initiative to build low-cost houses under the Naya Pakistan Housing Programme (NPHP) has come to a halt due to a delay in its transfer of land to the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA), according to news sources.

RDA Chairman Tariq Mehmood expressed his views on the matter during a meeting with top officials of Gujranwala, Lahore, Multan, and Faisalabad development authorities. The meeting was arranged to review the NPHP construction arrangements in these cities. Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Engineering (Punjab) Mian Mehmood-ur-Rasheed was also present on the occasion.
While discussing the project parameters, the minister was informed that RDA does not own vacant land which could be allocated for the project and asked for some time to acquire the needed land, with district administration’s help.

Previously, Punjab Parliamentary Secretary Adnan Chaudhary stated that the government had identified two sites for NPHP development in Rawalpindi. One of the sites was Chaklala Village locale of Dhoke Munshi. The site spans 1,000 kanals and is presently owned by the Capital Development Authority (CDA). The civic agency has acceded to allocate 508 kanals of the total 1,000 kanals to NPHP.
Similarly, the other identified site was along Chakri Road where the district administration had cleared 7,000 kanals of land. It was decided that low-cost houses will be developed on 3,000 kanals of the land, while the remaining chunk will be converted into a forest.
