Iqbal further expressed his concerns about the long distances between Bahawalpur and CPEC’s Multan-Sukkur (M-5) Motorway. He stated that if the city was kept away from this major highway, trade and business activities in the area would slow down.
Presently, a part of this motorway passes by Uch Sharif, which is 70 kilometres from Bahawalpur. This has led many of the city’s leading investors and industrialists to express their reservations about the current state of affairs.

Commissioner Asif Iqbal Chaudhry submitted a proposal to the provincial government for linking Bahawalpur to M-5 via East Jhagra; 31 kilometres away from the city. This will put the city on the CPEC route, and enhance its trade and business activities. In addition, the BCCI also talked about the development of an industrial estate for new investors in the city.
