Buying a used car in Islamabad? Don’t forget to verify the vehicle’s registration via the Department of Excise and Taxation, Islamabad, to determine the authenticity of the seller and their legal ownership of the vehicle before you proceed with the sale. Here’s a detailed guide on vehicle verification in Islamabad and its process, both online and in-person, which will help you purchase an authentic car or motorbike.
MTMIS, Islamabad
The process of vehicle verification online and in-person varies for every province, and the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) also has its own methods. However, ever since the Federal Excise and Taxation Department developed and launched the Motor Transport Information Management System (MTMIS), it has become easier than ever to check vehicle registration in a matter of minutes.
MTMIS, Islamabad, is a centralised information system that contains all the relevant data associated with vehicle registration, vehicle verification, traffic laws, issuances of driving licenses, as well as records of criminal offences and traffic rule violations. It helps you avoid a scam when you’re buying a used car in Islamabad by providing you with complete information of the vehicle and its owner to ensure that you are not purchasing a stolen car or motorbike.
Islamabad Vehicle Verification Process
You can easily verify the vehicle owner of a car or bike in Islamabad via:
- Official website
- Private apps
- Personal visits
- SMS
Let’s discuss the methods for vehicle verification in Islamabad in detail below.
Official Website
The easiest method for online vehicle verification is via the Official Website of the Excise and Taxation Department, ICT. Once you are on the main page, follow the steps below:
- Scroll down a little on the main page to find a list of “Online Services”. This list is also available in the drop-down menu at the top of the page.
- Click “Check Vehicle Detail”.
- This will open up the page shown in the screenshot, where you can enter the Registration Number and the Registration Date of the vehicle in question to get a detailed response.
Private Apps
Several private developers have created mobile applications that can help you check vehicle registration in Islamabad conveniently. However, as most of these have not been officially endorsed by the ICT or the Excise and Taxation Department, we’d advise that you use them with caution, if at all.
Personal Visits
Visiting the office of the Excise and Taxation Department is another way to verify vehicle ownership. Operating hours for the department are between 9 am to 4 pm, and you can visit the premises with the relevant documents or registration number to check vehicle registration in Islamabad in person. The department is located inside the HEC Building on Service Road E, near H 9/4, in Sector H-9, Islamabad. The contact number of the Excise and Taxation Department, ICT, is 051-9265588, where you can talk to a representative regarding all your complaints, queries, and concerns.
SMS
If you want to check vehicle registration in Islamabad via SMS, you might be disappointed. While a service had been launched where you could send the vehicle registration number to 8521 in a text message to get all of the requested details in minutes, our research suggests that the process may face delays or be unresponsive at times. However, if you are buying a car that is registered in the Islamabad Capital Territory, there is no harm in giving this quick process a try before moving towards other methods.
Details Received via the Vehicle Verification Process
Now you know the process of vehicle verification online and in-person if a car or motorbike is registered in Islamabad, but what are the details that you will receive if you follow one of the methods above. Well, by using an app, an SMS, or the online route, you will get the following information about the vehicle and its ownership:
- Registration Number
- Date of Registration
- Type of Vehicle
- Year of Manufacturing
- Colour of the Vehicle
- Engine Number
- Chassis Number
- Token Taxes Paid
- Owner’s Name
While vehicle verification in Islamabad is essential before buying a car from its previous owner, we would also recommend that you use this process to verify that the vehicle has now been registered under your name, once the sale has been processed. The official website of the Excise and Taxation Department of Islamabad also offers an Online Vehicle Registration service if you need to buy a new vehicle or transfer an old one to your name.
It is also important to note that after the issuance of the smart, chip-based National ID Cards (NIC), the Excise and Taxation Department also launched a chip-based vehicle registration card that now replaces the registration book, which was given to vehicle owners for years. Thus, do not forget to get your smart Vehicle Registration Card issued after buying a car or bike in the capital city, so that you have ample proof of ownership for resale purposes later on.
