Crackdown Against Underaged Drivers
Sindh Traffic Police Radio
Being a megalopolis, Karachi has the widest network of roads and streets in the country to facilitate over 20 million people living in it. The largest city of Pakistan is also home to many famous night spots and it literally never sleeps, which is why many of its major roads and expressways are usually occupied with normal and heavy traffic even till late at night.
For a bustling city like Karachi, it is very important to have a robust and highly responsive traffic police system. So, to facilitate the residents of the megacity, the Sindh government is currently working on many different initiatives to expand the institutional scope and introduce technological advancements for the improvement of the traffic system in the province.
Here we are going to walk you through some of the latest updates on the system of traffic police in Karachi that every driver in the city should be aware of.
Newly Issued Instructions By Sindh Police for Payers of Online Traffic Challan in Karachi
To put an end to bribery and other types of ill practices that are affecting the performance of the traffic police department in Karachi and the rest of the cities in Sindh, the provincial government has issued some new instructions for drivers who get ticketed by onsite traffic constables and are required to pay online challan. Here’s the English version of the instructions in Urdu shared in the image above:
- If you are required to pay an online traffic challan in Karachi, ask the traffic constable to note down your mobile number.
- Online make cash payments against the challan once you receive a confirmation SMS from 9110.
- If you don’t get an SMS, don’t make the payment at all.
- If you pay your traffic challan in Karachi without a confirmation message, it is highly likely that your payment will instead be pocketed by the constable.
- If the traffic constable makes excuses for having no internet connection, call the helpline number 9110 and lodge a complaint right away.
- Don’t follow the instructions of the traffic constable to go somewhere else for the payment of your online challan. Try to stay on the spot until the issue is resolved.
- In case of any discrepancies in the record related to your traffic challan, you can also register your complaint at the Inspector General of Police (Sindh) Complaint Management System website.
- It is important to identify dishonest traffic police constables and take necessary actions against them.
Launch of the New Traffic Surveillance System in Karachi
Putting the latest technology to the best use, the Sindh traffic police department has recently launched a state-of-the-art traffic surveillance system in Karachi. It is operated and looked after by the Traffic Surveillance Unit (TSU), which stays active 24/7.
The new traffic surveillance system in Karachi is inspired by similar digitised platforms that are used by many developed countries in today’s world to effectively manage traffic on roads. These surveillance systems are also designed to look out for any possible issues or hurdles that could slow down the traffic movement, ultimately resulting in traffic congestion.
The newly-formed Traffic Surveillance Unit (TSU) also takes help from Google Maps to operate the surveillance system. It helps them identify the areas with slow-moving traffic or a jam as Google Map highlights them in different colours. TSU then notifies the relevant traffic police kiosk in that particular area to get the issue resolved.
More than 1600 cameras have currently been installed at some of Karachi’s busiest thoroughfares to keep track of the movement of traffic throughout the city.
Sindh Police Crackdown Against Underage Drivers
One of the most common ill practices and violations of the traffic laws is the increasing number of underage drivers in the city, which often results in traffic accidents. In a recent development, the Sindh police department has tightened the noose for underage drivers in Karachi and other nearby cities.
Following the orders of the Sindh High Court, the authorities have launched a fully-fledged crackdown not only against underaged drivers but also their guardians. Underage children and teens driving cars, rickshaws, motorcycles or any other type of motorised vehicles now face a penalty and their vehicles are confiscated. The vehicle is not released until the payment of a hefty fine and scrutiny of all the relevant documentation.
