Importance of Sustainable Infrastructure
How to Make Our Cities Sustainable
The natural environment of our planet is changing, and it is changing at an alarming rate. Increased human activities and population growth are probably among the biggest factors disrupting the ecosystems on Earth, which could possibly lead to the extinction of different animal species.
Due to increasing environmental concerns, countries around the world are now shifting their focus towards the development of modern cities with sustainable infrastructure. The world is expected to invest around $90 billion in environmentally friendly and sustainable infrastructure by 2030. This was stated in a report released by the New Climate Economy (NCE), which is a flagship initiative of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate.
These investments are expected to boost green economic growth and to help us significantly reduce our carbon footprint, bringing down the impact of climate change. It is to protect all the natural resources that are the lifeblood of our planet’s ecosystem.
In this blog, we are going to learn more about the concept of sustainable infrastructure and the positive impact it would have on some of the world’s largest and most populous cities.
Understanding the Concept of Sustainable Infrastructure
According to the modern-day definition, the concept of sustainable infrastructure is based on the development of equipment and systems to sustain the urban lifestyle of the city in a highly efficient manner. Bridges, transportation networks, highways, and everything else that shapes up a city should be environmentally friendly.
More than 50% percent of the total global population now lives in cities and the phenomenon of urbanisation has almost reached a tipping point, which could cause some serious and irreversible damage to the planet.
However, the development of sustainable cities has given mankind some hope. It could be a more efficient and productive option to prevent sprawling of metropolitan areas, especially in developing countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and India, where the population is growing exponentially.
Importance of Sustainable Infrastructure
According to a report by the London School of Economics, around 70% of the total world population are expected to be living in urban areas by 2050. This greatly adds to the importance of sustainable development. The New Climate Economy (NCE) has also estimated that with better and more efficient urban planning, sustainable infrastructure would let us significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions within the next 10-15 years.
Enhancement of the means of collecting renewable energy is expected to be at the forefront of the model of sustainable cities of the future. This could allow billions of people around the world to have access to the electricity produced with the help of clean and green resources. All these measures would ultimately have a very positive impact on global green economic growth.
How Cities Can Work on Sustainable Urban Development Models
The data released from the United Nations (UN) says that cities now occupy only 3% of the total earth’s surface and still they are home to over 4 billion people. The incredibly high population density makes them naturally vulnerable to mismanagement and problems like polluted environments, lack of proper housing and infrastructure, and restricted mobility.
The scope of new sustainable urbanism is based on cities investing in more urban open spaces, renewable energy projects, policies to promote green energy-powered vehicles, and recycling of products.
Intelligently planned skyscrapers should also be a part of this sustainable urban development. Tall structures offering a delightful mix of residential, commercial, and corporate spaces are the most optimal use of the available land resources in tightly packed urban metropolitan areas. The smart and sustainable development of our cities will help us reduce pollution, preserve the flora and fauna of the world’s ecosystems and make our environments healthier and more liveable than ever before.
What do you think about the importance and scope of this new sustainable urbanism? Will it help us to reverse the damage that has been done to our natural environment to some extent? Feel free to share your thoughts on the subject by sending us an email at blog@zameen.com.
