Shaheed-e-Millat Expressway, also known as Shaheed-e-Millat Road is one of the most important thoroughfares in the city. It has been named in honour of Liaquat Ali Khan, the first Prime Minister of Pakistan. Owing to its vast infrastructure, which is based on a two-way multilane road, underpasses, and flyovers, Shaheed-e-Millat Expressway is used by a large number of vehicles and passengers on a daily basis for commuting purposes.
The vicinity of Shaheed-e-Millat Expressway touches some of the most prominent neighbourhoods of the city including KAECHS, Hillpark Housing Society, Bahadurabad, and PECHS. Some of the most popular supermarkets in Karachi are also found along the route of Shaheed-e-Millat Road.
In this blog, we have put together a detailed route guide on Shaheed-e-Millat Expressway, mentioning all of the major intersections, landmarks, and entry/exit points found along the course of the thoroughfare.
So, without any further delay, let’s get the ball rolling!
Jail Chowrangi Flyover (Starting Point)
To get onto Shaheed-e-Millat Road, you have to pass through the intersection of Jail Chowrangi Flyover, which would be the starting point of the expressway for you if you are heading from the city centre or other nearby areas. One of the biggest branches of Chase supermarket in the city is also located on Jail Chowrangi, right at the intersection of Shaheed-e-Millat Road and Kashmir Road.
If you are travelling on the opposite side of the road, you can use the Jail Chowrangi intersection to make your way to either Kashmir Road, University Road, or New MA Jinnah Road, depending on your desired destination. Heading straight onto the flyover will lead you to Jail Road, which further connects you to localities like Hyderabad Colony and PIB Colony. Karachi’s Central Jail is also a prominent landmark in the vicinity.
Tariq Road Intersection
Shaheed-e-Millat Road has been recently converted into a signal-free corridor with the help of underpasses and flyovers. Like other expressways in Karachi, there are no u-turns on this thoroughfare except for the intersections and entry/exit points. Tariq road intersection is going to be the very first intersection you’ll come across if you are coming from Jail Chowrangi.
If you want to get onto Tariq Road, you’ll have to turn right and get through a traffic signal. However, if you take a left from this intersection, it will take you straight towards Bahdurabad Chowrangi. Likewise, head straight into the underpass if you want to continue travelling on Shaheed-e-Millat Expressway.
Quick Fact: Popular among locals as well as people from other parts of the country, Tariq Road is one of the most visited shopping destinations in Karachi.
Umer Shareef Underpass (Previously Called Minto Circle Underpass)
Once you cross the Tariq Road intersection, you’ll find Naheed Supermarket and Chase Up departmental store on your left. After travelling for a few more seconds, you’ll be greeted by another underpass, which is known as Umer Shareef Underpass (formerly called Minto Circle Underpass). Instead of driving into the underpass, you can either take a left or right turn if you want to head onto Haider Ali Road.
There are also treelined service lanes on both sides of the road, which will take you to the residential and commercial streets in the surrounding areas. Using the intersection of Umer Sharif Underpass, you can also head over to Karachi’s very famous Hill Park by taking the route of the service lane on the right-hand side of the road.
Tipu Sultan Road Intersection
The next entry/exit point on the expressway is the Tipu Sultan Road Intersection. This means you can either take a left or right turn if you want to exit Shaheed-e-Millat Expressway and take the route of Tipu Sultan Road. You can also take a u-turn from the intersection to get onto the other side of the road and head back.
Baloch Colony Flyover and Intersection
Once you cross the Tipu Sultan Road Intersection, you’ll have to get onto the Baloch Colony Flyover to continue travelling on the Shaheed-e-Millat Road. It is a point where Shaheed-e-Millat intersects with Shahrah-e-Faisal, one of the longest and most popular roads in the city. So, if you want to get onto Shahrah-e-Faisal using this intersection, you simply need to take a left turn, instead of continuing your journey on the Baloch Colony Flyover.
Once you cross the flyover and land on the other side of the road, you’ll see the City School PAF Chapter on the left side of the road and a couple of petrol and CNG stations, which you can access by taking a slight left. You can also take a u-turn from here and get on the opposite side of the road if you need to. Otherwise, keep driving straight and get onto another flyover, which is followed by a long stretch of road, spanning a few kilometres without any intersections or entry/exit points.
You’ll see no signs of urban settlements on your left-hand side. However, on the right-hand side of the road is Manzoor Colony, which is home to one of the best wood furniture markets in Karachi. Iqra University also comes on the right-hand side of Shaheed-e-Millat Expressway if you are travelling from Jail Chowrangi to KPT Interchange. There are a few overhead bridges built at different points on this section of the road to facilitate pedestrians.
KPT Interchange Flyover and Intersection (Ending Point)
A few hundred metres before KPT Interchange, you’ll see a narrow road that’ll take you straight to the entrance of the Centre Point building, which is one of the most prominent landmarks in the vicinity. You can take multiple routes from here.
You can either get onto the flyover, after which you’ll also have a choice to either take a left turn to get onto Korangi Crossing Road or take a right turn to land on Korangi Road, which meets Khayaban-e-Ittehad, one of the most important roads in DHA Karachi, on its first intersection.
The roundabout underneath the KPT flyover is where three major roads converge: Korangi Road, Korangi Crossing Road, and Shaheed-e-Millat Expressway. Imtiaz Supermarket and the newly-opened Kababjees Bakers & Mart are also located on this roundabout.
You can also take a u-turn from here to head back to Shaheed-e-Millat Expressway or enter the service lane, which connects you to the neighbourhood of Defence View and facilities like Salma Supermarket and Iqra University. KPT flyover is overlooked by skyscrapers like Grove Residency and Centre Points—two of the tallest buildings in Karachi.
