Educational System In Hunza
Hunza’s literacy rate exceeds 70% for both boys and girls. Through concerted efforts by district governments and a series of initiatives, a large number of schools have been established. Education in Hunza has been introduced through three initiatives.
In the first initiative, the British government established the locality’s first-ever primary school in 1913. After Partition, the Government of Pakistan started opening schools in northern areas, especially in Hunza.Thereafter, Karim Aga Khan opened The Academy in Hunza in 1983 with hostel facilities. The school was built to impart education to girls, and so hostel facilities were also established. After the establishment of government institutes and the establishment of Aga Khan University’s Institute for Educational Development, a large number of private schools also came about in the region. By 1991, development of community schools was also initiated. In recent years, the establishment of Karakoram University has further amplified educational opportunities for pupils in Hunza.

Diamond Jubilee Middle School
This is one of the oldest schools in the region, as it was established in 1946. Since then, it has been imparting education to both girls and boys from grades Pre-Primary III to Grade VIII. The school has about 300 students each year and its 14 teachers are trained on a monthly basis. This is also a school by the Aga Khan Foundation. The session starts in April and new admissions are offered from December to April.

There are a series of schools of the Diamond Jubilee franchise, located all over Hunza. These include primary, middle and high schools.
Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Hunza
This was established in 1986, and provides education to girls from grade VIII to grade XII. The school follows the curriculum of Aga Khan University Examination but believes in a robust educational system where students are taught about health and community as well.
In the past 30 years, this school has produced numerous women who have gone to take up influential roles in various fields including medicine, engineering, agriculture, education leadership, teaching, research, lecturing, social work and nursing. Moreover, the school has various clubs for girls, and traditional music is also taught to everyone. Apart from an extensive calendar of activities throughout the academic year, field trips to nearby places are also arranged on a regular basis.
The campus of AKHSS spreads over 30,000 square feet and is a purpose-built campus. The architectural plan has been done in such a way that the surrounding natural beauty is elevated through designs. The school has state-of-the-art educational facilities.

There are a number of AKHSS branches in this region, including AKHSS, Sherqilla, which is a co-education institute from pre primary to Grade X. From Grade X onwards it only hosts girls. AKHSS, Gilgit is a school for boys from grades pre primary to VIII.
Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Gahkuch
Aga Khan Higher Secondary School (AKHSS), Gahkuch is one of the leading schools in Gilgit-Baltistan. This is a co-education institute and offers classes from grade VIII to XII and has prepared students for higher education in competitive national and international institutions.
In 2018, this school’s student, Sajida Jan from Sandi Yasin received the United World Colleges Scholarship in Central America, which speaks of the school’s extensive educational programs.

Moreover, the work of The Gilgit-Baltistan Educational Management Information System (GBEMIS) is also instrumental in this regard.
