The petrol prices in Pakistan are on a constant rise, making it increasingly difficult for the members of lower- and middle-income groups to fulfil their basic needs and necessities. Therefore, in a bid to provide some relief to the underprivileged segments of the society, Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahbaz Sharif has introduced the ‘Sasta Petrol, Sasta Diesel Scheme.’
This petrol relief package will offer a subsidy of PKR 2,000 to households earning a monthly income of less than PKR 40,000. The petrol subsidy will be given to the women head of the household and the recipients of the Benazir Income Support Programme will be automatically added to the list of beneficiaries.
“The recipients of Benazir Income Support Programme will be included among the beneficiaries and they will receive double payments initially but later, their payments would be clubbed to a single instalment,” said Finance Minister Miftah Ismail in a statement to media outlets. “Earlier, we were advised to incentivise motorcycle owners only, however, there are several families that do not even own a bike hence, we decided to cover all households earning less than Rs40,000 per month,” he added.
Furthermore, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the petrol subsidy amount announced by the government was equal to 5 percent of these families’ total income. It is also worth mentioning that the ‘Sasta Petrol, Sasta Diesel Scheme’ is expected to benefit more than 14 million households across Pakistan, including the 7.3 million families already registered under the Benazir Income Support Programme.
