–Options for Property Investment in Pakistan
Plot size conversion in Pakistan is a little different from what’s practiced in other countries. Working with units like marla, kanal, yard and feet often puts people in great confusion. To make things easily understandable for you, in this blog, we will explain to you the difference between the most common property measurement units in Pakistan.
Let’s get the ball rolling!
Plot Size Conversion In Pakistan: Marla or Square Yard? What to Use?
The property measurement unit we use to calculate the area of a piece of land greatly depends on the region we live in. Let suppose, if we live in Lahore, Islamabad or any other parts of Punjab, we’ll be using ‘marla’ and ‘kanal’ as property measurement units. However, that’s not the case for Karachi and other cities in Sindh, where the property measurement system greatly relies on ‘square yard’ and ‘square foot’ as measuring units.
The measuring unit of ‘square yard’ is also known as ‘gazz’ in Urdu and other local languages. However, if you use an advanced property portal like Zameen.com, it will be very easy for you to search for property according to your familiar property measurement unit by applying filters. Here are some more ways to use Zameen.com like a pro in your property hunt.
Quick Fact: Marla and Kanal are area-specific property measurement units mostly used in South Asian countries including Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. The origin of these property units dates back to the British era. In Pakistan, these measuring units are widely used in Punjab and the Islamabad Capital Territory.

That is certainly helpful as it would clear many things. I personally use the properties section of Zameen.com for such calculations as you find properties as per square metres, marlas and kanals.
if i have a plot 18 feet 6 inches width and 30.6 inch length. how many marla it will be if we locally call 272 sq for one marla. i have a confusion that simply multiply can be wrong .
There will be not plot with a length of 30.6 Inch.
If the same is 30 feet 6 inch then it would be almost 2.075 Malras considering 1 marla = 272 Sq. Feet…
can we build a house on 5 marla plot with G/f,1/f,2/f,and roof???
length x width / 272 = 1 marla
18.50 x 30.50 = 2.075 marla
But in lahore it should be divided by 225
so
length x width/225
so 18.50 x 30.50 = 2.5077 marla.
Disclaimer above calculation is for Lahore.
1.99 Marla
one marla and 12sq ft

Do contact with NAB & LDA Society Registrar Office to know the exact position of Raheem Garden … they have declared many societies illegal … if it fall in Illegal list then report to NAB & FIA and recover your money … don’t late it will be waste of your money
In fsd there is 225,270 and 272 sqft per marla.
may be in Lahore there is125 sqft per marla
But Zameen.com is working for all pakistan
People from different cities use this website…….
Faisalabad’s 1 marla is the same as 225, 270 & 272 sqft? Don’t you find it confusing?
Very helpful post.
Thanks for this.
Regards,
Zeeshan
I might be wrong but confused though. Please have a look at the topic heading. ” If 1 Marla = 125 Sq. Ft”, Is it so? or 1 Marla = 225 Sq. Ft.
Brother that is why they have mentioned in the title “if 1 marla = 225 sq. feet”. Zameen.com has defined the unit.
Anyway, this post is pretty helpful. Keep up the good work.
In some cities 1 Marla= 225 SQ Feet and in other cities 1 Marla is =272, In islamabad
DHA 1 Marla = 225 and in other areas 1 Marla = 272 Sq Feet.
This is great information. You haven’t mentioned Kanal in it. I always get confused in Marla and Kanal. I think it is 1kanal of 20 Marla or vice versa. Anyhow this is a great knowledge that everyone must have while dealing in buying and selling services of property. Thanks for sharing.
Ma sha Allah……………..Zameen.com is really playing brillient role in field of baying and selling services of property. Really appreciate of.
Regards,
Thanks
but not complete
Why multiple measuring units being used across Pakistan instead of defined standards like other countries
The CDA measures at 225, Lahore & Faisalabad at 272
The marla was standardized under British rule to be equal to the square rod, or 272.25 square feet, 30.25 square yards, or 25.2929 square metres. As such, it was exactly one 160th of an acre. The definition of marla varies between India and Pakistan.
this is totally wrong information….. they are giving round figure… that is wrong for registries and transfer papers….. Objection will be raised on this measurement…. if you entered in any challan
18.50 x 30.50 / 272 = 2.075 marla
But google search gives different conversion results, like 1 marla = 272.251 feet or 1 marla = 30.2501. Any one may try to search by google “marla equals to feet”. Others may guide with solid references.
I have plot of 19″width & 35″ length kindly tell what is the calculation of marla

A little less than 463 marlas or 23.15 kanals.
What is sarsahi??
Hi Amir,
Sarsahi is a land measurement, which is 25 square feet in size. One marla comprises nine sarsahis.
For Muhammad Shahid and other beneficiaries :
Total Square Feet 186*560 = 104,160
If 1 Marla is 272.25 Square Feet then total Marlas of 104,160 square feet= (104,160/272.25) =382.586 Marlas
Total Kanal if 1 Kanal is 20 Marlas = (382.586/20) = 19 Kanal 1 Marla
Total Acres if 1 acres is 8 kanal= 2 Acres and 3 Kanal 1 Marla
How I can calculate the Marla’s of this Plot,
If,
Front side: 20 ft
Back side : 50 ft
Left side : 52 ft
Right side: 22 ft
Answer : 8 Marla 4 Sarsahi if measuring unit is 225 Sq Feet per Marla

Team can you please tell me if I have plot of 1 KANAL CORNER (4500 sq,ft.), is it possible to divide into 10 marla of two?
if yes what would be the dimensions (Length, Width) of each 10 marla?
Hi Haris,
That depends on the bylaws of the housing society or area where your plot is. Some societies allow this kind of division, while others don’t, so confirm it with the relevant authorities first.
