There’s no denying that adding houseplants to your living space is one of the simplest ways to breathe some fresh air to the interior. However, some houseplants [no matter how aesthetically pleasing] are also toxic to the pets in your house. If you want to spruce up your home without this particular worry, consider keeping some pet-friendly houseplants from our list.
List of Some Pet-Friendly Houseplants
Looking for houseplants that are safe for cats and dogs? Consider these pet-friendly houseplants to get the best of both worlds:
- Boston Ferns
- Cat Grass
- Maidenhair Fern
- Spider Plant
- Staghorn Fern
- Tillandsia
- Lipstick Plant
Boston Ferns
Boston ferns – also known as Nephrolepis Exaltata – are the first mention on our list of houseplants safe for cats and dogs due to their popularity among homeowners in Pakistan. They are probably one of the most widely recognised indoor plants due to several reasons. First, these plants are great for beginners, and they are one of the easiest vegetations to maintain and care for. All they need is indirect sunlight and moist soil to survive.
Don’t worry about their incredibly attractive looking leaves with a feather-like texture. They are completely non-toxic and great for furry pets like cats, bunnies, and dogs. Besides being pet-friendly, they also make wonderful indoor plants that can either be hanged or used to enhance the beauty of a newly bought shelf.
Cat Grass
Cat grass – alternatively known as wheatgrass and pet grass – are mostly known for their non-toxic properties. Even though a type of grass, they are full of nutrients, including chlorophyll, fibre, Vitamin E, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and potassium, protein, carotenoids, and other such nutrients that are extremely great for your pets. Not to mention, cat grass also helps pets with upset stomachs. If you have a lawn or a backyard, you can grow them since they are easy to grow and care for, and do not require trimming. You can even plant them in a pot if you intend to keep them indoors.
Maidenhair Fern
Only a few plants are as pet-friendly and non-toxic houseplants as maidenhair fern. With soft, fan-shaped, and gorgeous looking leaves, they are quite similar to Boston fern. They might look high-maintenance, but trust us when we say this – they are extremely easy to care for if you keep them regularly watered.
Some of the best things about maidenhair fern are that they are low-maintenance, they bloom all year round, giving you a chance to grow your plants even while living with pets in a small space.
Spider Plant
Want to bring some non-toxic houseplants indoors? The spider plant is a spider-like plant with ombre green and white leaves that will not only beautify your interior but is extremely safe for your pets. Owing to their low-maintenance and easy upkeep, these houseplants are popular among concerned homeowners and pet owners. Since they can bear a little neglect, they can thrive in any weather condition.
Staghorn Fern
If you are a novice in the world of flora and looking for options in pet-friendly houseplants, you’ve found it. Staghorn is among the many species of houseplants safe for cats and dogs. Generally, these unusual looking plants have two types of leaves: one that is heart-shaped while the other looks like the horns of a deer.
Along with providing that extra layer of aesthetics to your interior, staghorn fern is non-toxic to both domestic cats and dogs. Not to mention, they work as air purifiers and remove harmful compounds from the indoor air.
Tillandsia
If you are a novice looking for a pet-friendly houseplant, you’ve found it. Tillandsia, also known as air plants, don’t need any soil to grow. The plant obtains nutrients from air and water, and they are a perfect fit for homes with pets. Besides being non-toxic to your furry friends [especially dogs], tillandsias are incredibly low-maintenance, decorative, and small.
Being air plants, they are light-weighted and can fit anywhere in your house – from shelves to coffee tables. Not to mention, tillandsia also makes a stunning living-art piece, and they can be displayed on wall hangings, shelves, racks, ladder-shelves, small urns, or in hanging glass bulbs. Just make sure to keep them away from the reach of your doggo.
Lipstick Plant
The next mention in our list of best pet-friendly indoor flowers is lipstick plants. They are extremely gorgeous and beautiful indoor flowers, mostly known for their interesting shape. The flower bud of the plant peeks out of a dark-coloured tube, making it look like a small lipstick. Hence the name, lipstick plant. The plant is non-toxic and extremely safe for homes with dogs and cats.
So, these were some of the pet-friendly houseplants that will help you decorate your home with greenery while simultaneously keeping it safe for your furry friends. We have mentioned the word ‘low-maintenance’ quite a few times in this blog. Just remember that low-maintenance doesn’t translate to no maintenance. Keep your plants hydrated and follow all the measures for their care and growth.
