So, without further ado, let’s get repelling!
World Health Organisation on Mosquito-Borne Diseases
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared mosquitoes as one of the deadliest insects in the world, mostly due to the ability to fly, carry, and spread diseases from one person to another. As per their official website, mosquitoes cause millions of deaths every year. Let’s take a look at some facts and figures [according to WHO] defining how mosquitoes have caused fatalities over the past few years.
Adding on, there are several types of mosquitoes in the world, and while some of their species are completely harmless, others can carry more than one disease. As such, malaria – a widespread disease carried by mosquitoes – results in thousands of deaths every year globally. It can easily be transmitted and spread from humans to humans via a mosquito’s bite.
Meanwhile, the global count of dengue has tripled over the past 30 years. Many countries around the world continue to report their first outbreak, which means it is still on earth even after several vaccines and top-class treatments.
As per the official website of WHO, chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever, and zika are some of the deadliest diseases that can hurt a person’s immune system and cause fatalities. These are all the diseases transmitted to humans by the Aedes aegypti – a fatal type of mosquito. Not to mention, more than half of the world’s population dwells in areas where this mosquito species is still alive and causing several diseases.
This kind of mosquito can be easily recognised by the white markings on its legs and a marking [in the form of a lyre] on the external area of its thorax. Take a look at the image below for reference.
The WHO has also emphasised on continuous efforts to control mosquitoes and prevent outbreaks. So, we have compiled this easy guide that you can use to create your own DIY natural mosquito repellent spray that can keep these critters at bay.

This one is self-explanatory. We know for a fact that neem is the best antibacterial and repellent, and neem oil is extracted from the seeds, tree, and fruits of the tree. Owing to its strong aroma, mosquitoes and other parasites are naturally repelled. Pro Tip: Rubbing alcohol saturates with essential oils better than water. Not to mention its antibacterial properties provide greater repellency against insects and mosquitoes. You can use it in combination with the essential oils we have mentioned in this list – just replace it with water, but be mindful of the quantity. A single tablespoon of rubbing alcohol is enough for the quantities we have mentioned in this post. Not only does it protect against mosquitoes, but it can also heal itches and allergies caused by mosquito bites. |
So, this concludes our post on how to make a homemade mosquito repellent spray using only natural and organic products. We have listed various mosquito repellents that can be applied directly to the skin. Before we sign-off, we would like to mention a few more things.
Remember, every skin reacts differently to the repellents we have mentioned in this list. We recommend that you conduct a spot test before applying it generously on your skin. Wait and see how your skin responds to it. If you get itches, red bumps, or unusual spots, immediately wash it off and see a doctor – if it doesn’t go away. Furthermore, you can use these DIY mosquito spray for a week at max, so make sure you are not making it in excessive amounts. Since there are no preservatives or chemicals in these products, store these in a cool and dry place. It is best to put them in a sealed container and keep it away from the reach of young children and pets.
