Do you want to change your legal name? If that’s the case, your first step should be to notify the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) by modifying your Computerized National Identity Card. Owing to its sensitive nature, NADRA name change procedure must be handled with utmost care and caution.
Since not a lot of people are familiar with the NADRA policy for change of name, we have put together a step-by-step guide that lists all the required documents, procedure, fees and other details.
Let’s start with the documents you will need for the change of name in NADRA.
List of Required Documents
These are the documents you must acquire to change your legal name with NADRA.
- NADRA name change affidavit on PKR 50 stamp paper, attested by Oath commissioner
- Certificate from Dar-Ul-Afta (in case of religion change only)
- Original CNIC, SCNIC or NICOP
The applicant must visit the NADRA centre in person along with a blood relative for the biometric verification of CNICF. Please note that the applicant can obtain the CNICF, which stands for Computerized National Identity Card Form, when they visit their designated NADRA centre.
If any blood or immediate relative is not alive, you can get the attestation done for CNICF by a gazetted officer.
NADRA Name Change Procedure
The NADRA name change procedure can be divided into two main steps:
- Obtaining NADRA name change affidavit
- Modifying NADRA CNIC
Let’s discuss each of these steps in detail.
How to Obtain a NADRA Name Change Affidavit
Step 1: NADRA has set its own format for this affidavit, which can be downloaded from the official Pak-Identity website launched by the Government of Pakistan.
Step 2: Once you have downloaded the format, simply enter the required details such as your old name, your new name, the name of your father or husband, as well as your CNIC number.
Step 3: Print out the Undertaking for Name Change on a PKR 50 stamp paper.
Step 4: Get the affidavit attested by the Oath Commissioner for the change of name on CNIC.
Modifying NADRA CNIC
Step 5: Visit the NADRA centre and collect your token.
Step 6: Go to the designated counter once it’s your turn and obtain the CNICF
Step 7: Submit the required documents and complete biometric verification
Step 8: Hand over your previous CNIC so it can be cancelled.
Step 9: Pay the fees and collect the receipt
Step 10: Collect your CNIC from the NADRA centre once you receive the confirmation message.
It is important to clarify that an applicant can only modify their names once. Neither can they revert to their old name or adopt a new one. However, women can legally change their last name in case of marriage or divorce.
Moreover, if the head of a household modifies his name, the rest of the dependants will have to modify their last names as well.
