Sohrab Goth Interchange (Starting Point)
Sir Shah Suleman Interchange
Toll Plaza Near Mangopir Road
Mauripur Road Interchange (Ending Point)
Based on an ever-expanding urban sprawl, Karachi is truly a megacity. It has the largest and most populous metropolitan area in Pakistan. The traffic on the roads of the city usually stays jam-packed, especially during peak hours. The worsening traffic situation is like a nightmare for Karachiites, which irritatingly increases the travel time between two points in the city.
The megacity needs more mass transportation systems like Green Line BRT and elevated signal-free routes to bring down the intensity of chaotic traffic conditions that people have to face on a daily basis. Lyari Expressway, which was completely opened in 2018 after 15 years of its initial launch, turned out to be one of the most welcoming additions to the city’s expansive road network. It is among several other mega projects in Karachi that were introduced in recent years.
More About Lyari Expressway
Stretching 38 kilometres, this super-long expressway literally takes you from one end of the city to another. It has reduced the travel time between different destinations from hours to minutes. The noteworthy expressway project is based on a two-way multi-lane road that runs through almost the entire city and is based on multiple entry/exit points, each of which is marked by a toll plaza and has a nominal entry fee. Constructed along the Lyari River in Karachi, it is a limited entry expressway and heavy traffic or two-wheeler vehicles are not allowed to travel on it.
Now without further ado, let’s get started with our route guide!
Karachi’s Lyari Expressway Route Guide: Major Infrastructure Features, Entry and Exit Points
From Karachi-Hyderabad M9 Motorway to Mauripur Road, here we’ll detail the entire 38-km route of Lyari Express, discussing all of its major entry and exit points.
Sohrab Goth Interchange (Starting Point)
Sohrab Goth Interchange marks the starting point of the expressway. The traffic coming from Shahrah-e-Pakistan and outside the city can use this interchange to get onto Lyari Expressway and continue with their journey. It is also the exit point for the traffic coming from the opposite direction. The maximum speed limit on this urban highway is 80 km/hr.
Sir Shah Suleman Interchange (Entry/Exit Point Near Liaquatabad)
The very next interchange that greets you on your way is the Sir Shah Suleman Interchange (entry/exit point near Liquatabad). If you live in Karachi, you would already know that Liaquatabad is located in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town. So, if you want to head towards Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, National Stadium, Karsaz, or other adjoining areas, you need to take an exit from Lyari Expressway at this point.
Note: Please read the signboards carefully or turn on Google Maps while driving on this expressway. If you accidentally miss a cut or turn on Lyari Expressway, you would have to travel several kilometres more until you reach the next interchange, which would be a waste of both time and fuel.
U-turn and Toll Plaza Near Mangopir Road
The next key infrastructure feature of this elevated signal-free route is a u-turn near Mangopir Road. You can use it if you have missed an entry/exit point or in case you want to head back. There’s also an interchange with a toll plaza here, which can be used by people living in Garden, Saddar Town, and surrounding vicinities to take the route of Lyari Expressway to travel to their respective destinations.
An Addition of New Urban Open Space: Ama Nasima and Ama Kulsoom Baloch Park has been constructed adjacent to the Lyari Expressway by the city administration. It spans an area of 5 acres and has delightful horticulture features developed by DMC Keamari. More such green spaces are needed around densely populated areas of Lyari and Shershah and other similar localities with squatter settlements (Kachi Abadis).
Mauripur Road Interchange (Ending Point)
Mauri Road Interchange marks the end of Lyari Expressway as well as its beginning for the traffic on the opposite side of the road. From this particular point, you can take a left to head towards Keamari or right if you want to take the route of Hub Road, Northern Bypass or Estate Avenue via Gulbai Flyover. You can also continue travelling on Mauripur Road if your destination is one of the beautiful beaches of Karachi like Hawke’s Bay beach or the recently upgraded Manora Beach Resort.
Important Guidelines: Make sure to follow the defined speed limits for your own and others’ safety on the road. Also, any violations of traffic rules are strictly dealt with by a vigilant team of highway police that overlooks and manages the traffic flow on the elevated corridor.
