Being one of the most important infrastructural developments of the city, the Lahore Ring Road (LRR)’s Southern Loop (SL-II) is currently being developed.
Due to this road, the distance between adjoining areas of Ferozepur Road, Defence Road and Raiwind Road from important developments in the city will significantly get reduced. The project is destined to impact various housing societies, including many phases of DHA Lahore, positively in terms of accessibility and the consequent interest of investors generated through its completion.
Therefore, it is important to give you an update on the project.
Earlier announcements
Earlier in January this year, it was announced that the southern loop of LRR will be open to traffic by June or July this year, according to a news report. The same report quoted the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif as saying that work on SL-III of the project needs to start as well. After these two months passed without seeing the inauguration of SL-III, the property agents hoped that the new inauguration will take place on August 14. With the August deadline missed as well, another date for expected inauguration was also shared.
Latest developments
Earlier in September this year, we came across a news report talking about the land swap deal that took place between Government of Punjab and the DHA Lahore. According to this deal, the DHA was to get 824 kanals of alternate land against the land it offered to the Lahore Ring Road Authority (LRRA) for the completion of SL-I. The land LRRA took from DHA is located in Mouza Dullu, Mouza Khurd Kalan, Mouza Dullu Khurd Attari, and Mouza Attari Saroba, which fall in DHA Phase IX.
With this deal taking place just recently, it could mean that some parts of LRR in SL-I that lie close to developed northern loop LRR are not complete yet. But this doesn’t mean that the rest of the project is facing any lapses. According to a news report shared by a local news channel in August 24, 2017, development work in SL-II is more than 70% complete, while asphalt carpeting of roads is underway.
According to details shared in this report, as of August 24, the foundation work on the project was 100% complete, while the completion status of cross pipe laying was 91%. Work done on pipe laying (MCW) was completed by 57%, while pole erection work was done by 10%. The same news report quoted Lahore Commissioner and LRRA Chairman Abdullah Sumbal saying that the development work on LRR SLL-II will be completed by mid-October, and soon after that, the project shall be inaugurated.
Current status
According to a report shared by local news media on October 17, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif inspected the progress of development on LRR’s southern loop. During his visit, the CM said that the southern loop of Lahore Ring Road is one of the many projects the government is working on to provide the latest transport facilities to the people, and that the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) is working on the project at a fast pace.
With half of October already gone and no date formally announced for the inauguration yet, it appears that the deadline has been pushed further. The latest news report shared in a local daily today also confirms that the inauguration is now expected in take place in the last week of November. According to this report, Sumbal expects that the road will open to traffic by the last week in November, as development work on SL-II in Kamahan, Gajju Matah to Adda Plot is close to completion. He was also told that the groundwork on SL-I and SL-II has been completed by 90%.
Let’s hope that the new deadline is met and SL-I and S-II see the much-awaited inauguration in the last week of November. In addition to that, we are also looking forward to initiation of development work on SL-III, a big part of which passes through Bahria Town. On the construction of SL-III, Bahria Town asked for stay orders from the Lahore High Court earlier in July this year according to a news source, which were granted. As soon as there is an update on it, we will keep you posted.

“He was also told that the groundwork on SL-I and SL-II has been completed by 90%, while no details were shared on the status of development work on SL-I.”
Some parts of this blog give an impression that only SL2 is close to completion and that in SL1 has parts where land has just now been acquired (in September). Almost all of the work in SL1 is also complete. Suggest checking things on the ground.
