The year 2020 saw some of the most dramatic changes in people’s lifestyles. The year was stagnant and meant a complete shift to how we view living spaces, and the need to modify them as per personal preferences. For this reason, there is a lot that has happened in terms of home decor ideas for 2021. This year it is all about using your home space efficiently, especially kitchen and repurposing it in a trendy way. In this blog, we will primarily focus on kitchen decor ideas for this year, and highlight the prevailing trends that you should be following.
Kitchen Decor Ideas 2021
In the last few years, influenced by prominent celebrities, most houses around the world opted for monotone interiors, a design palette that entered the kitchens as well. However, most designers then realized that there is such a thing as ‘too white’, and the need to make homes feel warmer, rather than colder. For this very reason, in 2021 we are seeing a lot more versatility as well as functionality in home decor, especially kitchens.
Broken Plan v/s Open Plan
With more people shut indoors because of coronavirus-induced lockdowns, there is a growing recognition that kitchens are additional spaces that need to be made more livable. We are, therefore, seeing a lot of broken planning, as compared to open floor plans. This broken plan kitchen will therefore mean that you’ll have a separate, designated kitchen area as compared to an open-space kitchen.
A kitchen with a door or separation will help you hide clutter, and allow you to lock the doors so your little children can stay safe.
Bold Colors
Bold colors are now replacing monotones and nude shades. Retro-colored cabinets are back but with a modern spin! It’s not about bright colors in 2021, it’s more about darker shades for cabinets as well as walls. We are seeing a lot of forest green, dark blue, black, grey, warmer tones of red, and in some cases brown as well. But these colors have to be used in moderation and in a manner that looks aesthetically pleasing. You have to remember that darker shades make spaces look smaller, and might not always be ideal for homes in warmer climates. For this, you can keep your walls painted white, but have darker cabinets against light-colored countertops. The key is layering, and you need to do it perfectly.
In colder climates, ‘moody kitchens’ are slowly transforming the kitchen space. These are painted in darker colors and have exquisite art displays that are revolutionizing the norms associated with kitchen decor.
Gold Finishes
Yes, gold finishings are a major trend for the year 2021. Gold kitchen sinks, gold or brass lighting fixtures, and gold knobs are all the things that you should consider to amplify the overall appearance of your kitchen. However, you need to be careful when installing these.
Your gold furnishings should be the centerpiece of your kitchen, and all other items such as cabinets, countertops, walls, and flooring should accentuate these furnishings. Don’t add darker shades against gold furnishings. Opt instead for white marble countertops and nude shade cabinets.
Rustic With Metallic
While the rustic theme has been trying to make a comeback for a while, it is finally here to stay. Rustic wood with a metallic touch has replaced laminated flooring and cabinets. It is also durable, cost-effective, and easy to maintain. Marble, wood, and metallics (be it as panels, knobs or in furnishings) is the new combination that offers warmth, and gives your kitchen a unique cafe-look. This is definitely the trend that most homes will be adopting this year.
Floating Shelves
These are perfect if you want to save money on cabinets. For wider and longer walls, floating shelves are an accessory that can be decorated with your colorful dining sets, vases, mason jars, mugs, and vintage plate collections.
A floating shelf also makes it easier to find stuff and makes your home feel like a lived-in space. These are also perfect for smaller kitchens as they make walls seem less crowded.
Pendant Lights
You’ll find pendant lights in most cafes and restaurants these days. They are essential, along with cabinet lighting. You can install Edison bulbs on rope and that can be a DIY-pendant light. A large number of lights stores have retro as well as new-age pendant lights. These are used above islands or any area designated for plating and/or cutting.
Dirty Kitchen
It only makes sense that if more people are entertaining guests at home, that there is a dirty kitchen to carry out most of the cooking. Dirty kitchens help keep your main kitchen less chaotic, clean and allow you to entertain in kitchens as an additional space. This ‘other kitchen,’ therefore, helps you to utilize your entire house efficiently.
You can also place your stocking fridge here.
Pantry
While a kitchen pantry has always been important, the need for storing food essentials during the 2020 pandemic has further amplified its need. It doesn’t matter if you have a small space, you can alter your pantry design and style accordingly. In most homes, kitchen larders have been redesigned to create a pantry.
Add in organizers and your pantry will make your cooking experience unlike any other.
If you have an even bigger space, you can add a mudroom right next to your pantry. Be sure to have an outdoor connection to it as well. Mudrooms are also essential if you want to store fresh produce, or if you plan on growing your own herbs in pots in your kitchen.
Move Away From Stainless Steel Hood
This move is in line with the rustic feel but doesn’t incorporate wood. Archaic, cemented hoods are what people are interested in this year. You can decorate these or keep them classic, as per your overall kitchen aesthetic.
Tiles
There is a growing demand for tiling kitchens; from floors to walls. With a large variety of tiles now easily available, you can get creative with colors and designs to amplify the overall look of your kitchen. Stone slabs are dominating from countertop to ceiling, to floor for waterfall edges, and wrapping around islands to make kitchens durable.
Marble and stone are both durable options and easy to maintain. If you have children, or you cook large quantities of food, having a tiled kitchen will make your kitchen always one step away from being clean.
