It’s that time of the year again when the heat has finally died down and winter is approaching. However, this season also brings the dreaded smog with it, an embodiment of all that air pollution that gets trapped in the atmosphere in these temperatures. You need to keep yourself and your home as safe as possible from this pollution to prevent any long-term harm for as long as possible. Here are some ways in which you can make your home safe for yourself and your family in this smoggy season!
Do a thorough cleaning
A thorough cleaning is necessary to remove the pollutants already in your home. In most cases, homes in Pakistan are cleaned using brooms and then a damp cloth. However, brooms can cause dust and other pollutants to stay lingering in the air of your home, so avoid having your homes swept in these months.
A much better option is to go for a vacuum and then a mop, or go for a mop. This will ensure that pollutants aren’t thrown and scattered in your home, ensuring that it is safer for you and your family’s well-being.
Carpets are out!
Carpets have been out for years now, but a lot of people still have rugs scattered about in their homes. It is better both for health and for the preservation of those rugs, to roll them up and put them safely away for a few months.
This is because carpeting is the top culprit for trapping dust and pollutants, therefore causing respiratory problems. So, get those rugs stowed away and let your gorgeous floors speak for themselves! If you have anyone asthmatic in your home, you’ll see the difference in their health clearly once you do so.
Ventilate your home
This is a step you should take throughout the year to keep your home fresh and the air clean. There should be cross-ventilation in the house, so keep at least two major windows open so that air travels in and out of your home freely.
In addition, exhaust fans are helpful in ensuring that air properly circulates in your home and pollutants are not given a chance to linger for long. However, keep all exhaust systems clean and invest in air purifiers. Now that your ACs are off, also cover their exhausts tightly to keep them clean till they are needed again next summer.
Go green with plants!
There are a large number of indoor plants which are excellent for improving the air quality of your home. Get a few plant pots and keep these miraculous plants in your home to keep the air filtered and minimise a large number of pollutants.
Some wonderful plants you can keep indoors without any hassle or mess are Snake Plants, Money Plants, Ficuses, and Bamboo Palms. Also install carbon monoxide detectors to keep a check on how much pollution is in your home.
Repaint the exteriors regularly
Most of the given measures are for the health of your family in the house, but what about the house itself? Most pollutants have a corroding or grimy effect on the exteriors and interiors of your home. Wash any red brick walls, and repaint the exteriors to give them a fresh look every couple of years.
This is also necessary to give them a protective layer, especially metallic elements such as gates and window grills. The garage should also be given regular cleaning and maintenance, so that your home does not lose its appeal due to the effects of pollution.
