Essential Tips to Keep a Carpet Looking New and Smelling Great
No matter how expensive or exclusive a carpet is, and regardless of how careful you are, a carpet will get dirty and stained. There’s only one thing you can do – deal with the problem as soon as it happens. So, here are some tips to help you take care of the carpets and keep them looking brand new:
- Invest in Carpet Protection
- Make Rules for Carpeted Areas
- Vacuum Regularly
- Sprinkle Baking Soda
- Yearly Cleaning and Washing
Invest in Carpet Protection
If you want to keep a carpet looking new, invest some money in its protection as well. As such, buy small rugs or doormats to be placed outside the room. Whenever someone enters the room, they will have to rub their feet on the rug before stepping on the carpet. You can also place protective mats under a heavy piece of furniture to avoid dents and leg marks.
Moreover, carpets also snag over time, so you should know how to deal with it. That said, whenever the carpet starts snagging, don’t pull it. No matter how tempted you are, pulling a snag will only make it worse and eventually tear your precious asset. Families with children and pets will relate to this one more than anything.
Make Rules for Carpeted Area
This one might be difficult for families with children – they don’t abide by any policy when it comes to eating or wearing shoes on the carpet. We know that shoes are one of the biggest bearers of dirt. Whether you have placed a rug outside or not, they will trail dirt and debris from outside to the carpet. Not to mention, shoes will also wear down the carpet faster.
So, if you want the carpet to keep looking new, ask everyone to take their shoes off when entering the carpeted area of the house. You can also place soft slippers near the carpeted area and encourage children to wear them before entering the carpeted area.
Vacuum Regularly
If you own a carpet, then investing in a vacuum is worth it. Taking care of a carpet in your home is not difficult if you have a vacuum cleaner. Vacuums are designed in a way to suck up all the dirt, hair, crumbs, and the particles residing in the carpet that can’t be seen with the naked eye. Regularly vacuum the carpeted areas if you want to prolong the life of the carpet. Depending on the placement of the carpet, make a schedule for vacuuming. If it’s placed in a high traffic area such as a hallway, common room, or living room, you’ll have to vacuum it regularly.
Sprinkle Baking Soda
This is an incredibly easy trick to make your carpet smell fresh and great at all times. Just sprinkle baking soda on the carpeted area right before vacuuming to make all the odours go away within a few minutes. You don’t need to buy special products from the store since baking soda works and is a lot cheaper.
In order for the hack to work, just sprinkle a layer of baking soda all over the carpeted area. Let it rest for at least 10 minutes. Vacuum the carpet [as you’d normally do]. You will notice that the carpeted floor smells much better, and all the odours have vanished.
Yearly Cleaning and Washing
Just like any other part of your house, carpets need to be deep cleaned and washed yearly or occasionally. The best time, usually in Pakistani households, is two weeks prior to Eid or Ramadan.
It doesn’t matter if you vacuum the carpet daily, washing it with detergents and antibacterial solutions will restore its former glory. Make sure you have nothing on the list when you are about to wash or deep clean the carpet. You can do this without actually having to remove the carpet from the floor [if you own a wet vacuum]. This will also make keep your carpet fluffy. Make sure to completely dry the carpet after washing it. A damp carpet will become the perfect host for mould and other infestations to grow.
Don’t Wait for Spills to Turn into Stains
No matter how many rules and policies you’ve made, carpets and accidental food and drinks spills can’t stay apart for long. You can ask your family members to cooperate with you, train your pets, and avoid the temptation of eating while sitting on the sofa, but you can’t certainly limit visitors and guests. A great hack to keep the carpet looking new and smelling fresh is to deal with the spills straight away before they turn into a big ugly stain.
On a side note, if you are tired of the way your old carpet looks, you can take help from one of our recently published posts where we have shared some tips to reuse your old carpet.
Now that you have all the information you need to take care of the carpets in your house – here’s a simple carpet cleaning hack to clean food and liquid spills.
How to Clean Spots on a Carpet?
We know for a fact that coffee and other such spills are inevitable, but there’s an easy way to deal with them. Firstly, you have to pay attention to the stain immediately. Secondly, never rub the stain – as it will only expand and get soaked in the carpet. Here’s how you should deal with a liquid or food spill on a carpet:
- The first step in cleaning a spill is to immediately throw some carpet cleaner on the spot.
- Gently dab the cleaning solution with a soft cloth or paper towels. Doing so will allow the paper towel to soak up the liquid.
- Change the towel/cloth if it gets too dirty.
- Get a clean and wet piece of towel or cloth and remove the stain with a cleaning agent.
