How frustrating it is when, after a steamy hot bath, you look at yourself in the mirror and your reflection is all fogged up. Let’s be honest, nobody wants to go through the trouble of cleaning a mirror after a relaxing shower, especially if it happens early in the morning when you could be running late for work. However, there are a few useful hacks to keep your bathroom mirror fog-free.
So, without further ado, let’s get started!
Simple Hacks to Keep Your Bathroom Mirrors from Fogging Up
You don’t have to invest a lot in defoggers or other chemicals to keep your bathroom mirrors fog-free. Some basic ingredients from your kitchen shelves can do the trick. Here are some ways to de-fog a bathroom mirror without much hassle.
- Vinegar
- Dish soap solution
- Shaving cream
- Blow dryer
- Glycerin
Let’s discuss these in detail.
Vinegar
You don’t need to buy any specialized product for cleaning the bathroom mirror after you take a hot bath. Instead, create a 50-50 solution of vinegar with water. Simply pour vinegar and water in equal ration into a spray bottle. Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid and apply it on the bathroom mirror. Use a dry cloth or a towel and wipe the surface down. You will be able to have steam-proof mirrors for about a day or two. This is perhaps one of the best ways of defogging a bathroom mirror without spending a penny. If you don’t like the lingering smell of vinegar that stays for some time after you have sprayed it on the mirror, then add a dash of lemon juice to the solution for a fresh-smelling, odor-free bathroom.
If you want streak-free mirrors, then wipe it with an old newspaper, which will absorb all the moisture keeping the mirrors spotless clean!
Handwash solution
If you really have a busy schedule and don’t have time to prepare a solution, as mentioned above, beforehand then use this simple trick to keep your bathroom mirrors fog-free. Take some handwash in your hand and add some water. Wipe this soapy solution across the mirror’s surface. Then wipe it clean with a paper towel. This keeps the mirror clean and fog-free for a few days.
Shaving cream
Pour a small amount of shaving cream you have available onto a folded paper towel. Wipe the mirror with the shaving cream towel onto the mirror. Take another clean towel and wipe it dry. Make sure the mirror is completely dry or you will find it blurry if it is not wiped off properly. Here are some key points to consider before you use this hack to keep your bathroom mirror fog-free.
- Use a good amount of shaving cream or it won’t be effective
- Make sure to wipe the mirror completely dry, otherwise you will end up with a blurry looking mirror.
- This same trick can be done using a shampoo, toothpaste and laundry detergent. You can use whichever of these ingredients you have handy.
Blow dryer
If you did not have time to defog the bathroom mirror before going for shower, then fret not. This easy trick can save your day. Use a blow dryer and aim it at the mirror. Keep it close to the mirror but not so close that it touches the mirror. Repeat the process a few times until you see the mirror clearing up.
Glycerin
Try adding glycerin to the wiping cloth when you wash your mirrors. You can buy it from any local pharmacy. When washing mirrors, pour some glycerin into the bucket of water and wipe down your mirrors with it. The glycerin present in the solution will keep your bathroom mirror from fogging up for a few days.
Other Ways to Keep Your Bathroom Mirrors Fog-Free
If you are tired of trying out temporary hacks to de-fog the bathroom mirror, then it is best to invest in some permanent solution. Below are some other ways to keep your bathroom mirrors from fogging up.
- Install a fogless mirror
- Use specialty defogging products
- Defogging pad
- Keep the bathroom well-ventilated
- Run a cold shower
Let’s discuss these in detail.
Install a fogless mirror
It is best to install an anti-fog mirror in the bathroom if you are looking for a permanent fix. Here are the three most popular options to choose from.
- Anti-fog mirrors with chemical-based coating are one of the most popular options. You just have to remove them from your vanity area or the wall and place them at some dry place or else if they are exposed to moisture for a long time, the protective coating can easily be removed.
- There are heated mirrors as well. Yes, you heard that right! Heated mirrors have reservoirs placed just behind the mirror, which can easily mimic the temperature of the water. These mirrors can last longer as they do not require much maintenance.
- Mirrors placed with the shower pipe also work effectively. This works on the same principle as that of the heated mirror. It requires a valve which extracts water from the shower pipe and is used for heating the mirror. The installation process of this fogless mirror is a bit difficult and complicated.
Use specialized defogging products
If you like to keep things proper, then buy a specialized defogger for your bathroom mirror. Just like the one you buy for defogging a car mirror, similarly there are many such specialized glass cleaning products out there in the market that can help keep mirrors spot-free.
Specialized defogging solutions which are usually used on car windshields, can help to keep your bathroom mirrors fog free for up to more than a month. This saves you from regularly spraying homemade solutions everyday on the bathroom mirrors.
Defogging pad
A defogging pad is electrical and sticks to the back of your bathroom mirror. It comes with a guarantee that it can clear fog from even the foggiest of bathrooms. This type of method is quite expensive and also requires proper installation, which is why professionals don’t recommend this in rented houses.
- You need to hire a professional who can install a defogging pad
- First, the mirror would be removed and then connected with electricity
- Depending on the size of your mirror, the pad will cost at least 100 dollars.
Keep the bathroom well-ventilated
A simple and sure shot way of keeping mirrors fog free is to open the doors and windows of your bathroom. Good ventilation is important as it helps provide fresh air and stops water vapours from forming. This causes the fog to blur your mirror. This is even more effective during the summer months and is not much recommended during the winter season.
Run a cold shower
Are you really fond of hot, steamy baths even in the summer season? If you can manage to run a cold shower occasionally, then this will definitely slow down fog formation and keep the bathroom cool and mirrors clean. In case you don’t like a cold shower, then run a cold shower for 30 seconds every morning and switch over to a warm setting, this will keep your shower area cool and won’t let the water vapours to form and fog the mirror.
Please note this will only keep the fog from quickly forming up. You will still have to use any of the above-mentioned hacks to keep fog-free mirrors for a long time. Also, this is applicable for relatively smaller bathrooms.
