Doctors and allied medical professionals at PIMS, while providing clinical services, also focus on applied research in their respective departments. Capital Hospital
After it was decided to move the status of the capital city from Karachi to Islamabad, an executive order was also passed by the then government to form a body that will be responsible for the development and maintenance of the newly built capital. Later it was surpassed by the issuance of the CDA ordinance which laid the foundations of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), its powers as well as responsibilities and jurisdiction. One of these responsibilities was to provide healthcare facilities to the citizens for which Capital Hospital was developed under the umbrella of CDA.
Capital Hospital started inside the CDA as a daycare medical centre to provide preventive medical services to the residents and especially the staff of CDA. As the authority felt the growing need for a proper medical facility for inpatient treatment, it was planned to develop the daycare medical centre into a full-fledged hospital which was inaugurated in March 1981.
Initially, the hospital had a total capacity of 60 beds but in 1992, some new departments were also started which increased the capacity to 250 beds. Along with modern medical and surgical facilities, the institute also has the privilege of launching Nuclear Cardiology in Pakistan. Here is a list of departments the hospital currently has:
