Model Town Lahore is one of the most popular neighbourhoods in the city. An ideal location, quality lifestyle, unparalleled facilities nearby are what make it an ideal place to live.
History Of Model Town
The history of Model Town dates back to 1921, before the creation of Pakistan. Under the Chairmanship of Rai Bahadur Ganga Ram on 27th February 1921, about 200 people gathered in Lahore’s Town Hall with a purpose to establish a co-operative housing society which was named ‘Garden Town’.
After the partition in 1947, the place was declared as evacuee property and in 1960 it was registered as “Co-operative Model Town Society.” However, the core objectives of the project—to conceive, design, develop, maintain a garden town, build houses—remained the same.
Let’s look at the facilities enjoyed by the residents of Model Town.
Facilities In Model Town
Some of the most prominent facilities available here are:
- Central location
- Public transport
- Security
- Parks and fields
- Commercial markets
- Other amenities
- Cafes and restaurants
Let’s take a deeper look at all these facilities.
Central Location
Initially, Model Town was far away from the main city of Lahore. But ever since the city developed on the other side of the canal, it gradually gained the edge of being a prime and central location.
The society is divided into ten different blocks—A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R and S. The blocks M, N, P, Q, R and S are called Model Town Extension and these are administered by LDA. Due to its prime location, unique design, facilities and the sizes it offers, the neighborhood is considered one of the posh localities of Lahore.
There are multiple entry and exit points that join Model Town with other areas like Kalma Chowk, Ferozepur Road, Township and another popular housing society of Lahore, Faisal Town. These points and road networks make it easier for residents to access other parts of the city.
The Lahore Railway Station is just about 30 to 40 minutes’ drive from Model Town and it takes half an hour to 45 minutes to reach the Lahore airport. Moreover, Main Liberty Market is just 10 minutes away and Thokar Niaz Baig is 20 to 25 minutes away.
Public Transport
People can easily find public transport in and near Model Town Lahore. So, it doesn’t really matter if you don’t own a car, you can always rely on alternative modes of transportation.
One of the best things about this neighbourhood is that you can find bus stop shelters here. The Feeder Bus Service on Model Town Circular Road makes stops at every block and also takes you to other areas of the city.
You can also easily find rickshaws in the markets. A number of ride-hailing services are also available in this part of the city and you can book a ride to travel conveniently.
Security
Security is probably the first thing everyone considers while buying residential properties and Model Town, without a doubt, is one of the safest areas in Lahore.
There are check-posts on every entry point. Round-the-clock security is maintained by its administration within all blocks as well as on main Circular Road. Other than this, Dolphin Police also helps ensure the protection of residents living in Model Town.
One of the best things about Model Town from a security point of view is the installation of barriers in almost every street. Most of these barriers are opened and closed at a certain time while some are kept open throughout the night to let visitors and residents enter or exit, of course, after receiving clearance from the checkpost personnel.
Parks And Fields
One of the most fascinating things about Model Town is the abundance of parks. You will find triangular parks of all sizes in every block of the society. Thanks to the administration’s stringent security measures, these places are safe for children and adults alike.
Model Town Park is not only the biggest park in the society but also one of the biggest parks in Lahore. It is located in the center of the neighbourhood, so it’s easily accessible for residents living in different blocks. Model Town Park is not an ordinary park that merely offers lush greenery and a jogging track to visitors. This beautiful spot has a lake, a boating facility, gazebos, a kids’ play-area, a canteen and comfortable benches that are placed at different points. The park has four entrances and a circular jogging track of 2.5 kilometers.
Markets
Markets are present in each block. The A block market has workshops, battery shops and paint shops, while the C block market, also known as Bank Square Market, is famous for street food and cafes.
The biggest market for shopping is on Model Town Link Road where you can not only shop for your wardrobe but you can also buy house accessories, furniture, fixtures, groceries and other items. Ammanah Mall is the most popular spot for shopping in this area where outlets of many local and international brands can be found.
Other nearby shopping markets are:
- Main Liberty Market
- Ichhra Bazar
- International Market
Other Amenities
Facilities like mosques and community centers add value to the property of an area. Each block in Model Town has its own main mosque and a number of other, slightly smaller, establishments to offer prayers five times a day.
The society also has many schools including Beaconhouse, Lahore Grammar School (LGS) and Divisional Public School (DPS). Quaid-e-Azam Law College is also situated near Model Town Link Road.
For Model Town residents tending to gardens, there are many nurseries in different blocks where one can easily get plants and flowers. Home gardening essentials can easily be found in different markets here. Moreover, Model Town has its own state-of-the-art community center where halls for weddings and other events can be booked by members as well as outsiders.
Cafes And Restaurants
There are traditional street food options available here, for the most part, but as you go towards Model Town Link Road, your options start becoming more wide-ranging. From continental to fast food, you will find plenty of options in all Model Town including McDonald’s, KFC, Howdy and Jay Bee’s Ice Cream.
For options outside of Model Town you can visit:
- Monal Restaurant in Gulberg is only a 10-minute drive away
- Mei Kong in Faisal Town is 10 minutes away
- M. M. Alam Road is only 15 minutes away which is the hub of fine dining in Lahore
