There is no denying the fact that you can’t survive without water. However, the tap water at home contains various microorganisms that can’t be detected and identified from the naked eye. Consumption of contaminated water can cause various diseases like dysentery, cholera and typhoid. It is important to ensure that the water you are drinking is clean and pure. In this blog, we are going to discuss some of the best and easiest ways to purify water at home.
Let’s check them out.
Top Ways to Purify Water at Home
There are various simple ways to ensure the water you’re consuming at home is clean. For your convenience, we have listed some of the best ways to purify water naturally at home below:
- Boiling
- Disinfecting it with chlorine
- Installing water filters
- Solar Disinfectant
Let’s discuss each of these water purification methods one by one.
Boiling
The tried-and-tested method to purify water at home is to simply boil the tap water for a considerable amount of time in order to kill or inactivate germs, viruses and other microorganisms that can cause fatal diseases.
Boiling water is similar to pasteurization. Just like milk is pasteurized at a certain temperature, boiling water at home kills organisms that can cause harm or infection. You need to boil water for at least a minute or two. Then let the water cool down on its own before using it.
Disinfecting it with chlorine
Here is how to purify water at home: Use chlorine tablets. If you have a water tank at home and you consume the same water for drinking purposes then it is important to disinfect the water in your tank. Chlorine or water purification tablets can be bought either from stores or online.
These are effervescent tablets that are easily dissolved in water and can kill all the disease-causing microorganisms such as cholera and typhoid. Each tablet size is specifically designed to cater to a certain amount of water. Usually, these tablets can treat water from 1 liter to 2,500 liters of water.
Installing water filters
There are different kinds of water purification systems in filters. Some water filters are better at removing contaminants. Let’s discuss some of the best water filters at home.
Sediment Filter
One of the most common water purifiers at home is a Sediment Filter. It’s also one of the simplest water filtration methods. You really don’t have to do a lot. This particular method removes sediments like heavy metals, rust, sand and other large particles suspended in water.
It is used as a low-cost pre-filter, along with other water filtration systems at home, like GAC filter and Reverse Osmosis filtration systems, so that other filters don’t get clogged from large particles. Once you see the cartridge is turning brown, just get it removed.
Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Filters
Carbon filters absorb impurities from fluid. The pollutants in the fluid and other contaminants are trapped by the activated carbon. These filters also help remove any unpleasant odours from tap water. GAC is one of the most commonly used filters in homes but it is not effective in removing dissolved inorganic substances in the water.
UV Water Filter
It is one of the best ways to disinfect water and remove bacteria and pathogens completely. The ultraviolet rays can destroy 99% of microorganisms without changing the water’s taste and odour. These water filter systems are usually paired with the common carbon filter or the reverse osmosis filter.
UV water filters are recommended for houses where the water is believed to be contaminated by different bacteria and parasites, such as E.Coli or Cryptosporidium. The UV filter is usually blue in colour and it needs to be connected with an electric source in order to operate. Using these UV filters is one of the most common ways to purify water at home.
Solar Disinfectant
This is probably one of the most inexpensive and natural ways to purify water at home.
You can use solar energy to disinfect and purify water. But this is generally a slower process. Keep a plastic bottle of water out in the sun for 6-8 hours, or for 2 days if it’s cloudy outside, to thoroughly disinfect water before consuming it. The UV-A rays in sunlight help kill germs.
