What is Origami?
The roots of this unique art are in Japan, and many historians believe that Origami was first introduced in Japanese art society right after the invention of paper in China. At that time, paper wasn’t used widely in the world due to the low production and high prices, so the origami creation was strictly reserved for a few communities.
In a nutshell, origami is an art focused on turning a simple sheet of paper into something pretty, but the folding techniques are complex and a little challenging to master. After all, turning a piece of paper into something that looks both pleasing to the eyes and sits well with your room décor is a truly unique feat.

Origami Fairy Lights
Next on our list of DIY origami projects is paper ballons. There’s a reason why the art of origami is known as a cost-effective room decoration idea, and you will know why it after trying out this trick. You can easily transform an ordinary string of fairy lights into something amazing by following our step-by-step guide. Before we begin, let’s take a look at the material that you will need for origami string light.
Material Required
The list of material required for crafting origami string light is mentioned below:
- A string of fairy lights
- Patterned paper sheets
- A pair of scissors
- Glue
Step-by-Step Guide
While you can choose any shape, we have selected a basic origami paper balloon to attach to the fairy lights, as shown in the picture above.
- Cut out a perfect square using a pair of scissors. We recommend that you use 15×15 cm square for this technique.
- Fold the paper from end to the other – forming a triangle. Repeat this step with the opposite ends, and you will end up with a cross pattern on your paper.
- Now fold the paper into half and press it.
- Unfold the paper again.
- Once you have the centre point, fold the paper into quarters – forming a pyramid and then press it to make a triangle.
- Fold one end of the triangle all the way up to the central point. Repeat this step until a small cube is formed.
- Keeping the pointy end of the cube towards you and gently press down the paper from all sides for a stable shape.
- Without changing the direction of the cube, fold small triangles on both sides from the end that is pointing towards you.
- Repeat this step on the opposite pointy ends too.
- Now, carefully make wings over the triangles you have just formed. Repeat this step on all sides.
- Add the wings to the hollow side of the triangle.
- You will notice a small hole on either side of the balloon.
- Bring it near your mouth and blow some air into it to make it look like a cubic balloon.
Once you have crafted enough origami balloons [around 12 to 15], use glue to stick them to fairy lights at a distance from one another.
Colourful Bird Strings
Next on our list of best origami room décor ideas is colourful bird strings. Just like two ideas mentioned above, it is also a great technique that makes great hangings, or you can even decorate your walls or windows with these paper birds. Let’s take a look at the material you will need to craft origami birds.
Material Required
Here’s a list of things that you will need for colourful origami bird strings:
- Coloured paper sheets
- Plastic wire or fishing wire
- Needle
- A pair of scissors
Step-by-Step Guide
For crafting origami birds or paper birds, make sure you are using colourful paper that is shaded on both sides. Once you have all the material, here’s what you need to do:
- Take a coloured paper sheet and cut a perfect square out of it with scissors.
- Place the paper in such a way that its point corner faces towards you. Now, take the left corner and fold it in a quarter.
- Repeat the same with the right corner. You will end up with a cone shape [only with a pointy end opposing you].
- Take that pointy end and fold it to make it a perfect cone.
- Fold both corners of the cone and bring it to centreline – forming two small triangles.
- Now, unfold both small triangles.
- Flip the piece of paper over again in a way that the pointy end faces you.
- Make a squash fold using the crease lines you just made with small triangles. Repeat this step on both sides of the cone, and you will end up with a valley fold to make it look like the feet of the bird.
- Fold the cone in half. Keep the pointy end on your right side.
- Make an inside reverse fold to form the head and beak of the bird.
- Your origami bird is complete.
Once you have crafted enough birds to hang, take the fishing wire and cut it into at least 10 and 8 inches. Use a needle to attach the birds with the wire and secure it with a knot. You can make as many as you want and hang it near the window for a more beautiful outlook.
