Step-by-Step Guide on How to Fix a Hole in the Wall
We have previously shared comprehensive guides on DIY door installation, DIY kitchen cabinet installation, and beginner’s guide for tiling a bathroom floor. In the same manner we’ll now explain how to fix a hole in the wall, step by step, to help you reduce the cost of repairs:
- Step 1: Buy and Gather Supplies
- Step 2: Prepare the Filling
- Step 3: Fill the Hole
- Step 4: Sand the Wall
- Step 5: Prepare the Paint
- Step 6: Finishing Touch
Step 1: Buy and Gather Supplies
Although a few supplies are needed for fixing holes in drywall, you still need to make sure that the material is high-quality and enough to cover everything at once.
Moving forward, you need to make sure that you get the exact shade of paint. The best way is to keep a small paint chip when you visit the local hardware store. Show it to the representative and buy the same as the current.
Step 2: Prepare the Filling
The next step in our guide for filling a hole in drywall is mixing up the plaster. Take a small amount of plaster [or any other patching compound], and mix it until it is smooth. Make sure there are no bubbles.
Moreover, if there’s a small hole, you wouldn’t need much. Not to mention, make enough mixture of patching compound that covers the hole at once so you can avoid the hassles of mixing again.
Step 3: Fill the Hole
Once you have prepared the mixture, put it on the corner of the putty knife and completely fill in the holes with slight pressure. Try to avoid getting the mixture around the holes – if it happens, you can wipe it using a dampened towel. Make sure you remove the excess before the plaster dries out. Just be careful, you don’t want to end up removing the plaster from the holes.
Note: You might have to repeat this step to fill the hole depending on its size.
Step 4: Sand the Wall
After you have filled the holes, wait for the plaster to dry completely. Once it has dried, take the sandpaper and sand the plaster to blend into the wall.
Note: Be extremely cautious if the wall is textured, you don’t want to over sand the wall and remove the texture.
Step 5: Prepare the Paint
Right after you have levelled the filling, the next step in our guide for how to fix a hole in the drywall is to cover the plaster with paint. In case you are using a paint can mix up the paint to a smooth consistency and colour using a plastic knife or any similar tool.
Step 6: Finishing Touch
Moving forward, you need to cover the holes with the paint. With the help of a small paintbrush, lightly dab the paint on the plaster. Depending on the shade you want, it may take a few coats of paint to get the desired colour.
So, this concludes our piece on how to fill a hole in the wall with filler. We hope that this guide helps every homeowner. If you are looking for a guide on how to fill a hole in a door, you can use the steps mentioned above just consider the material of the door.
