DIY Ways to Recycle Old Tyres
It is quite unfortunate, but usually old tyres end up in a pile of rubbish or on a landfill site. If you are smart and creative, you can easily repurpose old tyres and give your garden an artistic touch! Following things can be made from recycled tyres.
- Make garden chairs
- Multi-tiered flower pots
- Hanging pots
- Play area
- Bird feeder or snowman?
- Fun Animals
- Retaining Walls
Let us check out in detail how we can make use of old garden tyres.
Make garden chairs
Who doesn’t want to enjoy tea out in the garden? But for that you need a table set. With some spare old tires, you can create your own table and garden chairs. They are not only sturdy and durable but contribute beautifully to your garden’s décor.
Paint old tyres with different colours. Using your imagination and creativity, you can also create patterns on them. Stack these tyres to create backless chairs or you can even create the chair’s back by sticking a tyre. Make a soft pad in the center using foam as a seat. Choose a colourful or bold design for the fabric of your seat. Cut a tyre in half to make the chair’s handles and nail it in using screws. For the table, stack tyres and instead of foam you can place a piece of white marble or a round-shaped glass. There you go! A perfect table set tucked in the corner of your garden, where you can unwind yourself after a day’s work.
Multi-tiered flower pots
You don’t need to buy expensive fancy looking flower pots. All you need to do is get hold of some spare tyres and make colourful flower pots out of them. Reserve an area in your garden where you can create a multi-tiered container garden using stacked up old tyres.
Paint these tyres with different colours to give a vibrant garden décor. Once you have painted the tyres, fill the center area of the tyre with soil and plant seasonal flowers in them. The dull corner in your garden springs into life with this colourful container garden.
Hanging planters
If you don’t own a garden, you can use hanging planters using old tyres. Cut tyres in three equal pieces. Fill up some soil in the tyre’s center and plant seasonal flowers. If you have a tree outside the house, you can hang these planters on their branches. In fact, there are many areas where you can hang these tyres – on the front wall, from the terrace, in the garden trellis or in your windows.
If you want to have a kitchen garden of your own, make use of old tyres to plant useful herbs, like coriander, mint, garlic and fenugreek in your kitchen’s window. Check out our blog on how to have a kitchen garden of your own.
Play area
Using old tires, you can create a fun play area for your kids. One of the most common ideas to reuse old tyres is to make a swing out of them. Your child would love to sit on the tyre and take a swing! Make sure you have fastened the swing from a tree using a chain or rope.
A hammock can also be constructed using old tyres. Paint these tyres and cut them in half. A toddler can easily fit inside the hammock. Use sturdy ropes or chains to attach the hammock to two trees in your garden. Moreover, you can repurpose old tyres to make a beautiful passage in your garden. Instead of going for an expensive tiled pathway, you can use colourful, vibrant tyres as walkways.
Bird feeder or Snowman?
Reuse old tyres by turning them into a bird feeder in your garden. Put some bird feed and hang the tyre from a sturdy tree. You can also build a decorative snowman using old tyres. Paint the tyres white in colour and stack three tyres on top of each other to make the snowman’s body. For the snowman’s face and hat, use smaller sized tyres. You can paint the hat either red or black. Cut out some black circles from the rubber strips and paste them as the snowman’s eyes. Make sure to paint the nose red. There you go! You have a fun snowman that can help add a bit of oomph to you winter holiday decor.
Fun Animals
Another way to recycle old tyres to add a little zing to outdoor decor is to craft animals out of them. Your kids would love them. Use your imagination and think creatively about what kind of animals you can make. Horse, elephant, giraffe, zebra, frogs and turtles are some of the animals you can easily make using worn tyres. You can almost create a zoo within the green space of your house and your little ones would be ecstatic to see it!
Retaining Walls
There are different kinds of walls used when constructing a house. You know what’s coming next. Yes! You can even construct a retaining wall using old tyres. These retaining walls are built a lot like the steps in a house. Bury each tyre in the hill only partially. Fill it with bark and soil. Stack up the tyres until a retaining wall is built which is as tall as you desire it to be. To convert this retaining wall into a landscape, plant some seasonal flowers or grass in the center space of each tyre and there you have a retaining wall that adds up to your home décor.
