With the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) aiming for a digital Punjab, there has been an influx of digital payment solutions and processes in the province, with most of the government-related services shifting online and becoming a lot more convenient and quicker. However, you need to know how to operate these online portals to benefit from them. Here’s a detailed guide on how to check and pay traffic e-challan in Punjab in case you’ve been charged with a traffic rule violation in the province.
About Traffic e-Challans in Punjab
Firstly, let’s understand a little more about e-Challans for traffic rule violations in Punjab. Traditionally, all forms of traffic rule violation challans were issued on paper with a lengthy process of filing them and paying for them at the local police station.
However, after the establishment of the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) in 2015, a Punjab Police Integrated Command and Control Centre (PPIC3) was created to manage and oversee the law and order situation in various cities of Punjab. This included the installation of security cameras in all of the major cities of Punjab to make them safer for the residents.
The e-challan system, however, uses special Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and Red Light Monitoring System (RLMS) to monitor traffic on the roads and generates automatic challans for all traffic violators which are then sent to their homes. The identity of the vehicle owner is determined using the ANPR photos and the Motor Transport Information Management System (MTMIS) that also helps in the process of vehicle verification in Punjab.
It is also important to note that even if someone else was driving the vehicle, the owner is responsible for paying the penalty within 10 days to prevent the vehicle from being impounded or seized by the police.
How to Check for an e-Challan Online?
Considering that your vehicle might be seized by the traffic police in Punjab due to unpaid traffic rule violation challans and that you might not even be aware of any violations if the car is shared between different members of the family and registered under your name, it is important to keep a check online for any possible traffic fines or dues.
Here’s how to check for an e-challan online:
- Visit the PSCA’s e-Challan page as shown in the image above.
- Enter your car’s number plate and the CNIC of the person under whose name the car is registered.
- The system will quickly tell you if you have a pending challan that has not been paid and the nature of the traffic rule violation.
- You can also print the details via this system if you do not receive a challan on your residential address or have lost the copy you received.
The PSCA Android app also provides you with the same functionality, allowing you to check fines online against your vehicle’s licence plate number.
How to Pay Traffic e-Challan in Punjab?
You have 10 days to pay the challan from the day that it is received. Failure to pay the challan within 10 days may force the police to seize your vehicle until all of the dues and fines are cleared. There are two methods to pay e-challans for traffic rule violations:
In-Person
When the e-challan service was launched, the only option was to visit any branch of the Bank of Punjab (BOP) or National Bank of Punjab (NBP) with a printed copy of the challan and submit the required amount. However, the digital payment of traffic challans has now been made possible for several cities in Punjab. Thus, most of the banks in cities like Lahore, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad, will also accept over the counter payments. Payments can also be made via ATMs.
Online
With the recent digital payment service, you can now use the ePay Punjab app to generate a traffic challan with a unique Payment Slip Identification (PSID) number using your vehicle’s licence plate number to pay a traffic challan online. Then, enter the PSID using any bank’s online banking service and pay the challan from the convenience of your home.
