Most Popular Golf Courses in Karachi
These are some of the most highly rated golf courses in Karachi that all golf lovers should know about.
Karachi Golf Club
Karachi Golf Club is one of the most iconic golf courses in the entire country. This international standard championship golf course is located inside PNS Karsaz, only a 15-minute drive from Jinnah International Airport and about 25 minutes from Pearl Continental Karachi and Marriot Hotel.
The history of this stunning golf course dates back to 1888 when it started as an affiliate of Sindh Club before being registered as an independent club on the pattern of Bombay Golf Club in 1891. It was considered one of the most popular recreational spaces in the region at the time, attracting the elite and British dignitaries for a round of golf on its sprawling greens.
However, a few years after the independence of Pakistan, the golf course was relocated to a 440-acre land around a neglected RAF 9 Hole Course on Drigh Road near Karsaz. The land was leased by the Ministry of Defence. In 1959, Patron-in-Chief of Pakistan Golf Union Field Marshal M. Ayyub Khan inaugurated the Par-71, 18-hole sandy course. The new location was widely barren and dotted with sandy fairways, cacti, acacia trees, reeds, and marshy areas. Owing to these unique features, Karachi Golf Club was added to the list of 100 Interesting Golf Courses in the World.
Fortunately, things took a turn for the better in 1985 as efforts were made to improve the course. In 1988, President of Pakistan General M. Zia-ul-Haq inaugurated the nine holes that had been recently turfed and adorned with lush green trees. Three years later, Peter Heradine – one of the most esteemed golf course architects in the world – was invited to design the 18-holes championship course. It is worth mentioning that Heradine is credited for designing and co-designing more than 160 golf courses in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Following the completion of the 18-hole green course, the government commissioned another nine holes in 1992. Today, Karachi Golf Club and its affiliated facilities grace 205 acres of land and boast three state-of-the-art courses known as Blue, Yellow and Red. These courses regularly host Pakistan Open Golf Championships and Sponsor Tournaments. Furthermore, the Pakistan Masters Golf Championship has been hosted five times at Karachi Golf Club.
