As of February 2021, around 10 million Pakistanis are currently living abroad with 1.5 million living in the United Arab Emirates. To facilitate foreign remittances, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has introduced a key initiative, Roshan Digital Accounts of which eight commercial banks are a part. What is unique about this initiative is that this is the first time overseas Pakistanis will be able to open an online bank account. These accounts have been introduced to facilitate foreign direct investment in the country, but can also be used for account opening, operation, and making payments, with no requirements of visiting a physical bank branch or submitting hard copies of documents for opening an account.
