Low Crime Rate in Lahore
Like other advanced metropolises in the world, Pakistan’s second-largest city, Lahore, is now home to a highly sophisticated transportation system and state-of-the-art infrastructure. The city is also an epicenter of history, dotted with monumental structures and buildings. With vibrant food traditions and historical bazaars, the City of Gardens is now an internationally acclaimed tourist destination and has recently been listed among ‘52 places to love in 2021’ by the New York Times.
When compared to other major cities in Pakistan, Lahore has lower crime rates, thanks in part, to the extremely vigilant police force and other related law enforcement authorities in the city. To further improve the law and order situation in the metropolitan area, the Chief of Police Department (CCPO) has just introduced the Ababeel Squad in Lahore. In this blog, we are going to learn more about this newly introduced police force wing including its fleet and key responsibilities.
So, without any further delay, let’s get started!
More About Ababeel Squad in Lahore
The basic purpose of the formation of the Ababeel Squad in Lahore is to improve the law and order situation and bring down the crime rate in the city. This new police force wing in Lahore was introduced with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. As discussed, the Ababeel Squad has been formed by CCPO Lahore to aid the local police in fighting crimes. The fleet of this police wing is based on 40 personnel and 20 motorcycles.
Ababeel Squad will primarily focus on patrolling the congested areas of the city and will act as a rapid response unit in terms of cordoning off crime scenes in such localities. It will work side by side with the other two important police force wings in Lahore including Dolphin Force and Anti Riot Force.
Dolphin Force in Lahore
This Lahore police force wing is also known as the elite security unit. Dolphin Force was launched by the Chief Minister of Punjab in 2016. After the successful launch in Lahore, the operations of the Dolphin Force were further expanded to the twin cities.
Dolphin Force in Lahore has hundreds of personnel and motorcycles in its fleet. It is probably the very first police force in the entire country to be equipped with 500cc Honda sports bikes. It has been inspired by the Istanbul Police Dolphin Force.
Anti Riot Force
Riot police is a special type of police force, which is formed, trained, and equipped to confront the protesting crowds, which is important to control violence and riots. Trained in Istanbul by the Turkish police, Anti Riot Force in Lahore acts as the first line of defence for the law enforcement authorities in curbing violent protests.
The anti-riot unit has been divided into multiple groups, which have special vehicles for patrolling and surveillance. Moreover, Anti Riot Force is also tasked with closely monitoring the crowd of the Pakistan Super League every year to avoid any unforeseen incident.
Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA)
The formation of the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA), which is a tech-driven policing system is also among the biggest reasons that have lowered the crime rate in Lahore. Under the banner of PSCA, the law enforcement authorities have introduced many noteworthy initiatives.
The introduction of mobile and video surveillance technologies has fruitfully digitized and automated crime and traffic management systems in the city and its surrounding districts. The launch of a cutting-edge E-challan payment system is another noteworthy development in this regard.
Low Crime Rate in Lahore
Owing to all the aforementioned developments, Lahore has improved and maintained its spot in Numbeo’s World Crime Index (WCI) in recent years. As of March 2021, having crime and safety indices of 39.56% and 60.44%, respectively, Lahore beats New York, USA, in the list of the safest cities in the world.
