Home » Construction » A brief autopsy of construction material prices
Building a home is a huge commitment in terms of both finances and time or effort. So without much ado, let’s do a brief comparison of the estimated current prices of elementary construction materials (bricks, cement, sand, and steel) with average prices of the same in the previous year.
Bricks
The current estimated price of bricks is Rs 8,500 per 1,000 units. By comparison, the average price for the same number of bricks was Rs 7,900 in the previous year, which means that brick prices have increased by almost 7.59 per cent in one year.
Cement
A bag of cement was priced at Rs 505 last year. The current estimated price of a bag of cement is Rs 510. This isn’t much of an increase, but it can be felt when making bulk purchases of thousands of bags.
Sand
Chenab River sand is quite pricey as compared to sand from Ravi River – the former is almost double the price of the latter. According to our research and estimates, the average price of Chenab River sand ranged between Rs 24-25 per ft3 in the previous year, and has increased to between Rs 25-26 per ft3 this year.
On the other hand, the estimated average price of Ravi River sand is Rs 14 per ft3, which was Rs 12 per ft3 in the previous year.
Rebar
Rebar (short for reinforcing bars), which is also referred to as reinforcing steel bars, cost Rs 90 per kg on average. The estimated price of rebar was Rs 85 per kg last year. Again, the estimated difference of Rs 5 becomes significant when bought in tons.
Disclaimer: This post is meant to be a broad guideline. These prices are based on estimates provided to Zameen.com by Amer Adnan Associates, and are not meant to be exact depictions of market rates. The prices of these materials may also vary from city to city.

Dear Zain,
Good comparison. However, could youalso include things like average price range of tiles, wood, bathroom room fittings etc.
Thank you sir, this is a very useful information especially for the people living abroad. I would suggest if you can provide the estimated cost of per square feet of a house to build including sanitary , electrical , wooden works etc as general in good quality materials. (in complete.) Few years back GEO Tv was providing in programme “PROPERTY PROPERTY”
@ Mr Anwr Moin,
Thank you for liking the post. You have given a nice idea for my upcoming posts on construction materials. We really appreciate your feedback.
@ Mr Mushtaq Raja,
Seems like you are an overseas Pakistani. We really love contribution of overseas Pakistanis on Zameen.com.
Thank you for liking the post and giving suggestions. Other readers are also looking forward to further details on construction materials. InshaALLAH, we shall share more information on it soon.
Informative info on current prices of material. I want to add for information of public that I built my house in 2001 and bought material at that time at following rates:
Bricks for Rs.2800 per 1000 bricks
Cement for Rs.280 per bag
Rebar for Rs.28 per kg
As per current prices provided by Mr Zain Nadeem it appears that there is a difference of almost 3 times, so does that mean that construction cost has increased by three times over 2001
In 2001 my final cost came at Rs.700 per square foot for finishing the construction of my house.
So if costs have increased 3 times as per above analysis, then it comes out that today a hose should finish in Rs.700 x 3 = Rs.2100. Is it true as per my calculation?
I would appreciate any comments.
Dear Mr Umar,
The price of every other commodity has increased manifold in the past 10 years. Today, you need to spend a fortune to build a home with good features in it.
Well, I can’t say anything about per square foot construction rate in the current scenario because I have to do research on that yet, but apparently you calculation seems logical.
Look at the dollar rate in 2001 and inflation. A price of a corolla new was 8-12 lakh then. Now price is 16-25. But the cost of labor has tripled where as by dollar rate a person you hired before has gone higher than the same current dollar value
It would be appreciated if you could publish the Prices for Plywood, Softwood used for building a house.
I am living in Dubai and planning to start a small house in Lahore .
Dear Mr Imran,
InshaALLAH, we would share information on other construction materials soon. Your suggestions are appreciable. Thank you being a part of the discussion.
Unfortunatly, No response.
Getting Sand, briks and steel barr rate is just matter of 3 phone calls.
Geeting these rate s and post them as servay is not big thing you did.
If you really worked on construction cost which could be helpfull, you should of responsded.
Your information is Good for nothing…..
Dear Mr Naveed,
We are already planning to share some more information on construction materials.
Good effort & Very informative. Better be improved further by adding labour rate, construction cost per Sft for grade A, B & C construction as one of the guy has mentioned above. Besides this, usual thickness of roof slab for common spans etc may also be added.
Dear Mr Tufail,
Thank you for liking the post. InshaALLAH, we shall do another post on construction materials to share further details with our readers.
